Filed under ‘answers to the question why I didn’t take the Foreign Service Officer (FSO) exams myself’. 😆 . When I was a journalist covering the Department of Foreign Affairs, I would often get told by senior diplomats that I should give the FSOE a go. Even our foreign minister at that time told me the same thing after I cornered him for a quick interview. It’s a great career and I did mull it over. But in the end, I know I love journalism more. In my 20s, I was also way too impatient, way too opinionated, and I can’t help but call out things I don’t agree with or when things are unfair. So it really is much better for our country that my mouthy self didn’t do it. . But life does love to make funny jokes on people and I ended up marrying one. In the last six years, while we were posted abroad, I had to learn to let things go, be less mouthy, be a bit more patient, and to express my disagreement without being disagreeable. It could be my husband’s traits rubbing off on me but I can always say I just matured as I neared my 30s. 😛 . Eye on the prize. 🧿 The prize being a fully-settled, repatriated diplowife. 😉Moving is always tough and I’ve been living in a suitcase for about a month now. The good thing is: it gets better every single day as you make progress. Little by little.✨ . The hardest thing about moving from one country to another is starting from scratch. And funny enough, it happens even when you go back to your own country as a ‘repatriate’. . Moving back to Manila, I thought everything would be so easy once we arrive. I grew up here after all. But being away for six-and-a-half years means lots of changes. Especially since it’s a developing economy. From where to go to get whatever it is I need for the day (a rag, a face shield, or even a dust pan) to discovering how GrabPay works. @grab_ph was so different when we left some years ago! They deliver food and do errands for you now, too! 😱 I was amazed. Even Berlin doesn’t have such an app. 😂 Honestly, though. Doing several moves between flats and hotels both in Berlin and Manila. It’s exhausting — both physically and mentally. . As an expat or a re-pat, you want to feel settled ASAP. But sometimes, things take longer to settle down. The chaos and living in limbo takes a while and you just have to trust that process and get to your goal without snapping along the way. Even if it’s at a glacial pace — something the media practitioner in me has a hard time accepting. . Last week we visited a castle by in Friedrichsfelde Tierpark and it was so surreal and beautiful being serenaded (Bach?) one a 100+ year old piano in this neoclassical castle that's a couple hundred years old.
