Fosters Freeze, 2760 Fletcher Dr, Los Angeles (Atwater Village), CA 90039
Fosters Freeze first opened in Inglewood, CA, in 1946, and the soft serve was a hit. By 1951, there were 360 locations. Many have since closed, but you can still find a few throughout Southern California. The Fosters Freeze in Atwater Village looks like an old shack. The asphalt parking lot has many cracks. The parking lot is surprisingly large.
The menu includes burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs, chicken strips, burritos, fried sides, and soft serve. The soft serve is available as a cone, twister, milkshake, sundae, banana split, or parfait. Choose between chocolate or vanilla soft serve, or a swirl, dipped or not dipped, small or large. The sign says they serve real milk ice cream. It’s very similar to Dairy Queen.
Small vanilla cone ($2.75) + chocolate dip ($0.75): The chocolate dip tasted waxier than I remember and was softer than DQ’s dip. The cake cone was crisp and light. The vanilla ice cream was creamy and almost buttery (it even looked yellow), but it melted super fast. The ice cream should be firmer. It’s also pretty sweet. I still prefer DQ’s dipped cone.
There are two windows, one to order and one to pick up. There are a few old picnic tables outside and no indoor seating. Credit cards are accepted.

Chocolate dipped cone
Dairy Queen/Orange Julius, 201 E Magnolia Blvd, Burbank, CA 91502
I didn’t go to DQ last year, and I did actually miss it. My first soft serve ice cream was undoubtedly a DQ dipped cone. My parents were fans of the dipped cone. DQ is consistent…the dipped cone is always good! I’ve had it from DQs in other states too.
Chocolate dipped cone (small $5.44): The dipped cone is the same price as a sundae. I assume that you get the same amount of soft serve ice cream. The soft serve is smooth, creamy, and mild. It melts quickly. The chocolate shell is thin and crunchy. The cake cone is crispy and fresh. So simple and so good. I also appreciate the unique shape of the DQ soft serve.
You’ll find DQ/OJ on the second level of the Burbank Media Center mall.
The OJ menu includes smoothies, hot dogs, and beverages. The DQ side has Blizzards, PB parfaits, sundaes, banana splits, Dilly bars, and cones (plain, dipped in chocolate or confetti cake).
Credit cards accepted.
