Urgent Ask: Help a Black woman attend her grandfather’s funeral!!

On this #reparationsfriday, we have an opportunity to assist a Black MaGe that we at the anti-racist Facebook group Reparations Roundtable have been assisting. 

Her grandfather suddenly passed away, and she needs help with money for travel, a hotel stay, food, clothing, and other transportation while she is there!! She has enough to worry about and she shouldn’t have to worry about money while grieving!!

Today is #givingtuesday!!

It’s been a rough year for most of us, but especially for Black MaGes (marginalized genders: cis women, trans and nonbinary folks), who navigate multiple layers of systemic oppression. This is a time of year when we white folks offload wealth to charity and nonprofits for a tax write-off. But let’s be honest: Charities and nonprofits are NOT going to save us. This year, let’s skip the nonprofits and focus on pouring wealth into community-led and community-focused #mutualaid. Not only can this maximize our dollar-for-dollar impact, but it invests in the well-being, health and healing of communities the state and our society often ignore.

I pay #reparations because #directgiving focused on community has been shown to work way better than all of these charities ever could, with much of their money going to overhead or to stroking their own egos with lush galas. Paying reparations is also a debt owed by us white people for making and benefiting from a racist system that shafts Black MaGes time and time again. It’s the absolute least I can do.

It is Reparations Friday once again!

Unfortunately, we at Reparations Roundtable have not been meeting our fundraising goals, and as a result, not all of the Black MaGes (marginalized genders: cis women, trans, and nonbinary people) we’ve committed to support have received funds. Imagine if money you counted on every month just didn’t show up? It’s not okay, and we all need to step up!

I know times are stressful for everyone, so instead of focusing on urgency and lack, let’s talk about joy! 

Black MaGes deserve to live joyfully, free from the traps, persecutions, and punishments of white supremacy culture. When we provide support by paying and collecting reparations, we help Black MaGes find space to breathe, to step out of crisis, to focus on their families, to pursue their dreams. Everyone deserves this and no, not everyone has it! But as white folks, we know our skin color doesn’t get in our way. We’re not punished just for being white. This is why we pay reparations, to give back some of what’s been handed to us. To redistribute what’s not rightfully ours, so that everyone can experience safety, freedom, and joy.

Examples of people who we have helped with these funds:

One of our former assistees, L, has moved beyond our support and is now a proud homeowner and runs her own business! She entirely deserves all the credit for her success, but we were able to provide support when she needed it and now she is doing great. 

Another assistee, E, reached out when she was unhoused and struggling with addiction. She now has her own apartment, is doing great in recovery, and is taking steps to move forward with gender affirming medical care.

This is why we work hard every week to make sure Black MaGes' needs are met.

Hey, friends! I'm helping to raise funds for Johni, a Black woman who needs new laptop. Every bit helps!

I'm a 27 year-old girl currently finishing a Masters in Social work. I am a community organizer, a healer, a connector and an event planner! I am currently learning photography and working to create a brand for those who are going through life realizations about being different! I really need a nice laptop to continue all my work. I been using my one from work, which is outdated. I'm grateful for what I have now, but with the new skills I'm picking up on, as well as school, branding, and creating, I really need a reliable and good laptop! Apple will give me a discount as a student, so anything helps! I am tired of losing documents, the computer cutting off randomly, going slow and so much more! Black organizers are exhausted and the Chauvin verdict brought neither justice nor peace. We're raising funds this weekend to provide care and support for the folks on the ground working for a better world. How can you help a Black MaGe rest? We have a few options!!
