hello !!!! back with more headcanons, with a lot of them being language-centric :3
saparata and jophiel, the main founders of theria, spoke koine greek a la ptolemaic dynasty, and the sultanate and its vassals spoke arabic. the plains nations spoke variations of anatolian languages alongside greek (i especially hc pendaris to have spoken lycian historically!) while the jungle nations spoke old chinese. aculon spoke latin and koine greek as well. i refuse to believe that these diverse cultures didnt have their own languages, though i concede that there probably was a common tongue (with evidence being the existence of global chat). im not sure if latin wouldve been this common tongue, but it seems likely that it was, given the shared origin of many later characters being from aculon and the snows.
language wouldve been a point of both contention and solidarity amongst the nations, especially in regards to the snow languages. after aculon’s downfall, those who emigrated out of its ashes to pandora and yggdrasil wouldve brought their languages with them, hence the adoption of koine greek and latin as the languages of many nations created by these peoples.
on yggdrasil, schpood and cynikka wouldve continued aculonian tradition of speaking both koine greek and latin, though latin wouldve been heavily favored. benji’s elysium wouldve also used koine greek. meanwhile on pandora, jophiel wouldve continued to use her native greek as the speech of tricolor’s high elite, but the actual language of tricolor wouldve been a more deteriorated, diffused version of this as those who came with her from the old lands mingled with the natives of the northern island (tricolor in my head is based off of spain). legacy spoke a jungle (far eastern) language, but the rest of luminara wouldve been greek/latin speakers as well.
the natives of pandora wouldve been speakers of celtic family languages, with the exception of the cass coalition, which spoke Basque. the southern islanders abhorred the common tongue (latin), and wouldve only spoken it out of necessity, or only spoken another native pandoran language, an act viewed as a grievous insult by many northern nations.
flux is a polyglot, something he used to his advantage when speaking to seraphim - he addressed her in tricolor’s “pig” language, startling her, as while jophiel chose to speak the common language with her subjects, she only ever spoke with the high tongue in meetings.
animal players, like turkey or remy, have their own ways of communicating outside of verbalized speech. the level of intelligence and sentience granted to an animal player is attributed to their ability to both speak in a human tongue and to appear humanlike (hence the fact that arvinehere, storminghell’s firstborn, was removed from his post and from the line of succession for his alleged misdemeanors, while the player Crow, hailing from the same nation and animal origin, was able to marry and have children with the arguably human Elanuelo).
holy shart FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE WHO USES THE WORD POLYGLOT I LOVE THE WORD POLYGLOT !!! I only like it because it sounds good or like pleasing to me in some way I just like that word. .
ANYWAYS ONTO THE ACTUAL HEADCANON REVIEW STUFF !!!! Though many parts of this caught my eye, the last part specifically seemed VERY interesting to me, especially since I have been wondering about headcanons similar to it. Also holy fart the crowneulo crumbs at the end giggles
Back to my previous point of interest, during season 2.7 3 out of the 4 people in my quartet (including me) that I had stuck with weren’t human. This kinda caused me to wonder how our anatomy would be maneuvered or changed if we were to speak in human tongue. Would our talk have been magically translated? My animal didn’t even have a jaw or lips… so I had to work around that part. There was me who was an Opabinia (real creature btw suggest you look it up), my friend who was a Jackalope and my other friend who was a hedgehog.
All of us were hybrids and in formal wear in suits thanks to our respective jobs (me and hedgehog dude worked at our own law firm, while jackalope worked at his matchmaking business), so as to not obviously look raggedy.
Because of our sense of humanity and ability to speak in the human tongue I always wondered what it would be like without the latter present. I imagine that I wouldn’t be able to speak, only making gurgling sounds and the occasional soft noise thanks to my lack of a jaw. The jackalope would make obvious bunny noises, and same with the hedgehog, and in this case my character would also have to learn ASL alongside having to teach it to her friends while not being able to speak to or understand them without writing on a sign. Interesting ideas, this really got me thinking this time around LOLL
