Thank you for the ask, you’re the best! <3
How I feel about this character: My feelings towards JL are mixed. It’s easy to dislike him when he’s first introduced (well... as a teen, not a baby); he’s spoiled, full of himself and in general has a very unpleasant attitude. But it’s pointless to base my attitude toward him on his behavior alone without considering his background and how he was raised. This poor kid lost his parents very young, which means his only parental figures were (arguably very unprepared and emotionally unstable) uncles that had enough trouble dealing with interclan politics to now also deal with a baby. It didn’t help that he was picked on for not having parents (what the fuck??) and he seems to place a certain amount of his self-worth on how others perceive him, which is not surprising given his status. He then had to watch his (probably favorite) uncle not only turn out to be a “villain” (I use that term very tentatively) and “betray” all his other uncles, but also die a pretty gruesome death. This poor kid really can’t catch a break... So considering all of that, I don’t dislike him as much as I initially did, and I think he’s actually an interesting character that has a lot of exploration potential, especially for people like me who love to do character studies.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: I think his relationship with the two Lan juniors is interesting, but I don’t necessarily ship him with either of them... There’s potential though!
My non-romantic OTP for this character: JGY. Kids tend to favor adults that treat them with kindness (bonus points if they spoil them!) and JGY definitely does. I think both of them got from this relationship what they really wanted but lacked otherwise - JL got a substitute parent and JGY got a son and heir (JRS died very young and was never really in line to become the next sect leader). JL could experience what it feels like to have an adult care for you with genuine and overt affection (as opposed to JC’s “tough love” approach that is so reminiscent of his mother) and I believe this is the closest he ever got to what it would be like if his real parents were still alive, especially JYL, who would probably treat him in much the same way as JGY did. And JGY got the chance to care for a child in the way he probably assumed his own mother always wanted to care for him but was unable to (due to her being a prostitute). And I think their love for one another was absolutely genuine on both sides.
My unpopular opinion about this character: He loved JGY and he was his favorite uncle. I’m basing this off my numerous experiences with kids - the gentler and kinder you are to them, the more they will like you. If all else fails, bribe them with gifts. Maybe a cute puppy?
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish he got to “meet” his parents. I know they didn’t die as soon as he was born, but we don’t really form any long-lasting memories until we turn 3 or so. I wish he got the chance to really interact with his parents and hopefully be able to remember their faces and the sound of their voices. With how the events happened in canon, he was literally left with nothing but their names and a sword. I like to think JGY was very well-aware of this (having lost his mother very young) and told JL stories about his parents in as much detail and with as much praise as he possibly could. I think JC did the same when JL was younger (although only about his mother), but I think JGY continued with it even when JL got older. Ideally though, neither of his parents would die and everything would be better.
