When the attack on New York happened, Sam watched the reports of people needing to evacuate during and after; the destruction and chaos left in the wake so close to where he grew up.
He talks to his parents (we're okay, we're organizing to help people) and he takes leave, packs his car full of water bottles and supplies and drives to New York.
Sam is from Harlem, New York is his home. He meets up with his ex-girlfriend, now close-friend, Leila Taylor, who's been with his sister, and tearful reunions all around- His dad is doing work organizing people to get the help they need and helping reunite seperated families.
He thinks about what he'd do if he still had his wings; how he'd have helped... but it's a passing notion. Punching aliens isn't a viable option right now and there's work to do.
Leila's working on a book, "The Other Captain America"- about eugenics and racism as they apply to the legacy of Captain America, Isaiah Bradley, and superheroes, and she's having a field day criticizing superheroes-
"Macho assholes- Who's left afterwards to clean up the mess?"
Sam knows the hardest work is often left in the wake of what the heroes leave: he cleans up with firefighters and volunteers and the DSNY and when he stops into the bodega he sees the TV reports of Tony Stark doing interviews about what happened-
Captain America fields a few questions as well-
And Leila's the Captain America expert now- she keeps up a running commentary about Steve Rogers trivia and about what a mind-blowingly incredible event it is that he's been unfrozen
Sam immediately likes him: he lives up ridiculously well to the sweet-as-pie, wholesome hype. He's humble and he says a few things about the heroes being the regular women and men., Sam finds himself nodding along.
Leila rolls her eyes so hard Sam thinks she's gonna dislocate something and makes a wry comment about how this guy should go into politics, he's fuckin unreal.
Sam nudges her arm lightly and laughs that she's the most cynical person he knows.
She replies that he's just an old naive softie with a hero complex, but she jostles him back and kisses his forehead fondly
