hey i saw a post where you said if someone wanted your book that they should contact you. and you would give them a pdf i think. i was wondering if i could get it, and how much money it would cost. btw im referring to your senior thesis the disaster ghosts. i hope your doing ok, and are staying safe during this pandemic.

Some work I’ve been doing recently while @splitbandit and I dip our toe into the whole world of closed species! The Mirn are as much a part of the wildlife of the Great Basin as anything else that lives there, bonded closely to the trees that shelter them and the lifegiving sun that sustains them all. WILDFIRE CLASS: BURNING HEART Risk Assessment Score 1: Nonaggressive, low risk to humans. Avoidance recommended but not strictly necessary. Mysterious and reclusive, these ghosts spawn from forest fires of any size. Despite their imposing stature, they are nonaggressive towards humans and other wildlife unless badly provoked, and even then, they prefer to chase irritants away from their territory rather than kill them. Reports detail active engagement in the process of regrowth, and the spiritually-inclined consider them caretakers of forests recovering from fires. The “burning” elements of their bodies have been observed to be a cold flame that some speculate may have beneficial properties in the new growth process, but these claims are heavily disputed and evidence is hard to gather due to the Burning Heart’s fearful nature. PANDEMIC CLASS: MIASMA Risk Assessment Score 3: Aggressive to human presence and may create highly hazardous conditions in proximity. Avoid at all costs or destroy if possible. Bizarre creatures that superficially resemble a medieval plague doctor, Miasma ghosts are named for the pestilent aura that surrounds them. Though the beasts themselves are incredibly shy and fly off at any disturbance, their colorless, odorless aura is a major biohazard and lingers for hours after the ghost has departed. Individuals infected by the aura are often completely unaware that the ghost was ever there. Those traveling through areas with documented Miasma sightings should give high densities of small deceased mammals a wide berth, as they succumb to the aura very quickly and are often the only warning that a Miasma was near. No analysis of the exact composition of this aura has ever been successfully completed, but it’s thought to contain some sort of disease-causing spore due to the effectiveness of devices designed specifically to deal with spore inhalation. SHIPWRECK CLASS: ROGUE WAVE   Risk Assessment Score 3: Usually nonaggressive, but fairly easy to agitate. May pose a threat due to hazardous conditions in proximity. Avoidance strongly recommended.

Resembling a huge ray, rogue waves are one of the more mysterious and unpredictable species of disaster ghost. They are rarely observed despite their considerable size, as they spend the vast majority of their time floating peacefully at a moderate depth and take little interest in passing ships or any other human presence. However, they are known to turn aggressive without warning, causing rough seas by lashing their long tails and rearing their massive bodies out of the water to come crashing down on small vessels. There is little indication of what provokes this behavior, though some speculate that attacks are more frequent on days with clear weather. It is recommended that all vessels stay up to date with the latest radar technology in order to reliably detect and avoid these not-so-gentle giants. STORM CLASS: STORM EYE Risk Assessment Score 1: Nonaggressive, low risk to humans. Avoidance recommended but not strictly necessary. Spending the vast majority of their lives in the upper altitudes, it’s rare for storm eyes to have any interaction with humans. Relatively little is known about these ghosts or their origins and they seem to have little purpose beyond their passive existence. They spend their lives keeping themselves aloft with broad wings, constantly seeking out air currents to keep them in motion. For this reason they seem to gravitate towards storms, and are typically found in the company of other Hurricane Class ghosts due to the constant winds and weather they provide. The source and purpose of the bright beam that emanates from their single “eye” is unknown, though the more superstitious tout them as heralds of the end of life on Earth. WILDFIRE CLASS: SMOKEY Risk Assessment Score 5: Highly aggressive and extremely dangerous. Will seek out human targets to cause extreme injury or death. Priority destruction over all other threats highly recommended. These highly aggressive ghosts appear in any major forest fire caused by human error, earning them the colloquial collective name “Smokey.”  This romantic name suggests that they might represent angered forest guardians, but this claim is questionable due to the dripping embers from their mouths that can push a fire much farther into a forest than it would otherwise travel. Their deadliest traits mimic the traditional hazards of wildfires; they are constantly surrounded by a thick haze of burning-hot smoke that makes it difficult to guess their true shape and size, and they are capable of travelling at high speed. In addition, they will relentlessly pursue humans, leaving a trail of destruction until they are destroyed or their source of fuel is exhausted. Survivors of Smokey attacks advise trying to get “behind” the Smokey to lure it into sections of forest that have already been burned to ash, forcing it to fizzle out of existence. WILDFIRE CLASS: BLACKBONES Risk Assessment Score 2: Usually nonaggressive, but will note and react to human presence. Avoid if possible. Unlike most other species of disaster ghost, Blackbones ghosts appear very similar to individual victims of the disaster that spawn them. Incident reports describe Blackbones deer, rabbits, birds, wolves, bears, and other wildlife wandering the barren husks of lands recently ravaged by wildfires. They resemble blackened skeletons with the bones bearing a strong resemblance to burned, leafless branches, and it’s commonly speculated that their curious hybrid appearances are caused by the mass death of both plantlife and wildlife following a fire. Blackbones ghosts are relatively common compared to other species of Wildfire Class ghosts, and will often band together in small groups. They are generally as skittish as the wildlife they emulate, though humans should take care in their presence as their touch can cause severe burns similar to those caused by hot metal objects.
