Disco Nihilist - Journey to the End of the Night (EP)

Hopefully tomorrow will bring some more new electronic released via the Boomkat weekly mailout and the awesome power of Spotify but in the meantime I'm still absorbing last weeks releases. One of the best EPs I listened to was 'Journey to the End of the Night' by Disco Nihilist aka producer Mike Taylor from Portland, Maine. It is out now vinyly & digtally on the London-based Don't Be Afraid label.

Lead track 'Money Don't Matter 2 Night' is nothing to the Prince song of the same but instead is four and half minutes of classic house grooves that, while sounding contemporary, could have been made anything in the last 25 years. 'Late Nights' is a spritely groove and b-side 'Midnight To St. John' has the simplest of bassline hooks over a hit-hat-heavy beat.

The new Disco Nihilist Ep is hitting the record stores as we are listening to this fine, as always analog, piece of Acid House music. More of an tougher and raw interpretation compared to his last big Ep on Running Back, this one does get a bit whacky at parts. House for Whiskey drinkers, Cigar Smokers and Grown Ups - highly recommended.

C'est chiant ces gros players soundcloud ça tache tout.

Aujourd'hui causons d'un petit pas-si-nouveau producteur dans la sphère de la house, Disco Nihilist. Alors oui je vous vois venir de là, rien que le nom ça donne envie de prendre ses jambes à son coup en hurlant à la mort. Mais restez un peu. Le mec vient de pondre en toute discrétion un EP en forme d'oeuf de pâque techno du meilleur effet.

Sur House Rent Boogie et Film Grain Les synthés se font percussifs, marche cadencée d'une house franchement influencée par Detroit. Des thèmes parfois naïfs, parfois plus mélancoliques, dont le développement malicieux gagne en dynamisme ce que leurs répétitions auraient pu perdre en énergie. Madeleine de proust me voilà, on pense à Los Hermanos, Quetzal, en moins épique et plus sombre. Un groove sautillant, peux d’éléments mais des éléments malins, avec du croquant, du fondant, du sentiment.

Et du sentiment il y en a peu dans Beatdown Drums, sorte de carnaval des boites à rythmes, un brin martial mais loin d'être déplaisant. Pas de mélodie, snare kick drum paf et on s’envole dans une une marche chaussé de ses plus beaux rangers. On est pas là pour déconner.

Il y a un quatrième morceau, Operator Select, mais je l'ai pas acheté donc son absence dans mon itunes n'aura d'égal que son absence dans ma chronique. Un bon EP, qui ne sonne pas le glas de la révolution mais perpétue une belle idée de la house à l'ancienne, celle qui fait voyager très haut dans ses souvenirs les pieds collés au sol.

Glaubt da etwa jemand nicht an die evolutionäre Entwicklung der elektronischen Musikgeschichte? House stammt doch mehr oder weniger von Disco ab, oder nicht? Vielleicht glaubt Mike Taylor an die heilige Schöpfungsgeschichte des House und Jack ist sein Adam (OWdT004). Who knows? Sicher ist jedenfalls, dass der in Detroit aufgewachsene Disco Nihilist sein Handwerk versteht, einen äußerst ausgeprägten Maschinen- und Hardwarefetisch auslebt und ihn Gott sei Dank mit uns teilt. House Rent Boogie verkörpert eine geradlinige Oldschool House Produktion der Neuzeit, die sich mit ihrem melodischen Feuerwerk im Niemandsland zwischen Disco und Italo-Acid befindet - hochkomprimierter Wohlfühlsound.

So did disco's final stop result in the beginnings of house? A cursory glance over electronic music's evolution and you'd think so. Maybe Mike Taylor believes in the sacred origins of The House and Jack is his Adam (OWdT004)? Who knows? What is certain is that the raised in Detroit nihilist knows his craft, with a penchant for hard, almost mechanically precise sounds that are heavy, but still somehow very smooth. Thank god he shares it with us. House Rent Boogie encapsulates this straight 'oldskool' house sound of the modern era, comfortably taking its place somewhere between disco and Italo acid - freshly pressed sound-goodness.
