Grand Performances presents DISCO MANILA, a live performance celebrating dance music from disco-era Philippines.
Downtown Los Angeles, August 13, 2016 at 8pm - FREE
Put on your boogie shoes and embrace the resurgence of disco from the Manila Sound era, the next wave of global groove music. Manila Sound was a catch all moniker during the 70's describing Philippine popular music that embraced its American soul/folk/pop/jazz influences, combined it with Filipino modern aesthetics and polished it off with the musical proficiency of the vibrant Manila scene that somehow flourished during the Marcos-era Martial Law.
In recent years, DJ’s, record collectors, and music heads across the globe from San Francisco to Tokyo are digging for that rare Pinoy record from the 70’s and 80’s. 12” and 45’s by bands like Boyfriends, Blackbuster, Soul Jugglers, Please, and VST & Co. are going for top dollar online. The soul, funk and disco sounds from the Philippines is poised to move and shake a new international and multi-generational audience.
DISCO MANILA features live performances of classic Disco dance floor fillers by the original purveyors of the sound and those who lived it. DISCO MANILA is the LA summer party you won’t want to miss. VST & CO.'s Spanky Rigor and Roger Rigor • The Union: Jet Montelibano (of MUSIC & MAGIC), Jessica Casas (of SOMETHING SPECIAL), Nino de Jesus (of NEW MINSTRELS), Jo-Ann Visitacion, Fulton Montoya • 4700 Band: Maricar Cabrera, Ninette Tenza, Alvin Reyes, Val Villar • Eva Caparas (of MUSIC & MAGIC) • DJ set by JOEL QUIZON Featuring a special performance by MARK REDITO FKA SPAZZKID, a contemporary electronic artist. In my opinion, the best and most prolific era in Filipino popular music was the 70′s where the Manila Sound, Filipino Disco, Pinoy Jazz, Pinoy Folk and Pinoy Rock flourished.
The music of the disco era brought together aspects of all of the above. The music was funky, the style sophisticated, and dancing ruled pop culture.

They are using my Discomanila mix as part of Saturday, September 22, 2012's programming.
Bay area friends, come through for a really interesting and exciting 2 days at Bayanihan Community Center.
Join Kularts for two evenings of performance inspired by people’s resistance to state violence. Forty years ago, Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law, ushering over two decades of brutal dictatorship, repression, murders (aka “salvaging”), and the subsequent revolution, now known as” People Power Movement.”
Make Your Own Revolution provides a space for the community to commemorate the traumas of martial law and remember the strength of “people power.” Activities include staged readings; live music; participatory sidewalk drawing; and the installation of a bangka, a boat sculpture inspired by indigenous ritual.
In honor of Philippine Independence Day. Philippine disco from the late 70's and early 80's. (Originally Posted in 2010. Reposted for Mixcloud) http://thelivingcompilation.tumblr.com/post/388760944/discomanila-70s-philippine-disco-mix
