MASÉG (Typhoon) was created by Philippine dance choreographer Jay Loyola, composer Florante Aguilar of the award-winning film Harana and Kularts’ Artistic Director Alleluia Panis. Set in the Philippines circa 1400’s, Maség uses Shakespeare’s classic The Tempest as framework to investigate issues of immigration, indigenous spirituality, and subjugation of the weak in the riveting story of the once powerful and righteous tribal shaman leader, Panglima, who is politically exiled to the imagined typhoon-battered island of Puló, where he manipulates and enslaves the island deities into conjuring a powerful storm to sink his enemies’ ship. Struck by his own unspeakable acts of injustice Panglima suffers an internal conflict. Will he abandon his vengeance and end the feud or continue on the path of self destruction?
