PINOY GROOVE EXPERIENCE (Philippine Popular Music Revisited):
Nora Aunor - “I'll Never Find Another You” (1969) from Nora Aunor Sings
From the "Girl with the Golden Voice" on her first record with Alpha in 1969 doing a Seekers UK folk classic from 1964. This begins her meteoric rise and indelible imprint on Philippine popular music that would eventually lead her to one of the most influential and successful acting career the country has ever seen. But before all that, she charmed a nation as a teen with her unmistakably simple yet captivating voice.
I know her music is lost on a couple of generations, but there's so much to enjoy here. It's an enchanting and convincing version not to mention its gentle ring of poignancy in regards to the ever increasing Philippine diaspora. Yes, her accent is so clearly evident on this English tune and isn't it about time we Pinoys just enjoy hearing it instead of chuckling at it. Aren't we there yet? To me, that just sounds like home.
Eye'Em mobile photography app featured my mobile photos of Los Angeles on their blog.
Really honored. They're super cool folks based out of Berlin. Special shout to Stephanie at Eye'Em for reaching out to me to do a feature on LA.

From EyeEm:
What comes to mind when someone mentions Los Angeles? Hollywood? Glitz and glam? That’s only a small part of this city. There are also many other smaller enclaves and areas that make the city special, which Joel Quizon helps us discover! The LA-based film maker is currently working on a series of short films about people and places in LA (A Different LA and Traces) and thus travels a lot through the city. Hop on board with Joel and see his version of The City of Angels!
ONE '80
In the 80's these extended, remix or dub versions of songs were a great way for the producers to stretch their legs and put on that 5 minute intro or extra long drum break. The dub versions would emphasize the vocal break or they would add extra vocals making a rock song like "Cover Me" into a soul/reggae excursion. The best examples of these are the extended or 12 inch version of pop songs because they are not limited to length for radio programmability. It took whatever the best of that song had and gave you more of it. With that you get a 9 minute version of Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" or Chris Frantz' ridiculous drum intro for Talking Head's "Wild Wild Life" that seem to go on forever.
Some of the best producers like Arthur Baker, Jellybean Benitez, Steve Lillywhite, or David Morales took a crack at a Madonna track or a Clash record and most times they created a feast for the ears. Sometimes for the dance floor other times the manipulation would be so left field that it would be strictly for the headphones.
I've finally been able to post the first three set on Soundcloud. Hope to post more later. Mostly soft mixed and the tracks almost in their entirety.
REALITY WHICH IS TO COME - Yoko Ono sample from the Yoko and John conversation album. Featuring more jazzy selections from Joe Jackson, Style Council, New Edition, etc.
HIGHER DUB - Drum and bass heavy mix featuring Stevie Winwood, Level 42, Tears for Fears, Dead or Alive, Animotion, etc.
GIRLS DUB - Dub, reggae, synth variations from Talking Heads, Human League, Soft Cell, The Clash, Bruce Springsteen and E Street Band, and Cindy Lauper.
Thanks for listening.
