Is Technology Our Friend or Foe?
This is globalization era, 21st century. Who doesn’t know about technology? Majority of us are already know about it. For instance, we know how to use the knife. I assume that technology can change our world, because thing that eternal in this world is ‘change’. Change will always happens in our life. Therefore, we can’t also detach from changes that caused by technology. Like magnetic field from a magnet, technology also has their field to influence the world.
I have collected information by simply asking to several people around me which contain this question, “Is technology our friend?” and most people chose yes, meanwhile the rest chose no. Each has their reasons. After collecting information, I tried to focus on my own thought. I think that technology can be our enemy too, more like frenemy. Because it depends on how we used the technology.
Technology as a friend; makes everything easier. Time gets more effective because of technology. No need to rub the stones or woods to make fire for cooking. For students, like us, technology is our best friend. At this point in time, we never detach from technology. Technology really helps us in education. When we hear the word 'study', we tend to think about reading books and taking notes. With the help of technology, we can read books as many as we want to using E-book. It is more efficient bringing just one gadget than bringing some heavy books. We also can take notes using our gadget. Or we can record the lecturer's explanation so we can hear it again and again. It's really helpful for people who learn faster from hearing. Technology also helps us when doing assignment. We can search the material using the Internet, and learn a lot of new things from the other part of the world. In addition, we can share our thoughts and knowledge. This is why we are really close to technology.
Technology also increases job opportunities and also a place to work, like YouTube and blogs. Technology offers platforms to share anything creative to draw people’s attention and it produce money. It is easier and effective, right? We can use our spare time wisely and express our inner selves.
Technology as an enemy; maybe they're right that technology really helps us, but as we think about it more, the more it is useful to us the more perilous it is. We are using it recklessly and it adverse impact to us. Many of us using it haphazardly so it made us addicted to it. If we have addicted to something, we would rely on it. We will become too lazy to do anything because we will have this kind of mindset, “If there is something more effective why use the hard way?” Hence, people become lazy to move their butt from the bed to meet their friends because they can just chat them. But little did we know, it also distances us from people around us. As a result, it will lead some people to obesity.
Technology also creates individualism in some people, but they usually don’t realize it, or even deny it. Something more important that we should be doing in the real world, do we forget it because we are busy with cyberspace, or are we already too busy forgetting the real world? The question back to ourselves, whether we are now busy with our own affairs or not, we must keep returning to the real world.
There are also some people say no because of the bad impact from technology. To demonstrate, the uses of the lamp, lamp can be a mutagen for us, because of its radiation. The next example is hand-phone, which we use often. Hand-phone also a mutagen if we are not using it in the right way and always put it around us too often. Mutagen is a danger for our body. Therefore, they who say that technology is their enemy are treating technology as a usual tool, not a tool that we must make it as a friend. They tried to say to us that “use it as necessary as possible!”
So I think, technology is important but don’t rely on it. But if we don’t keep up to date with technology, we can’t survive in this competitive world. We can make it as our friend or foe depends on how we used it. So, is technology your friend, or your foe?
