Harriet Tubman To Replace Andrew Jackson On $20 Bill

Women's suffrage leaders will also be featured on the back of a new $10 bill.

I remember in eighth grade Social studies when we had to debate whether Jackson deserved to be on the $20 bill. Most of us determined he didn’t, and that his accomplishments were sort of outweighed by his faults and many other people would be a better choice to be memorialized on our money. I also like that Hamilton the Musical had influence on U.S. Currency. History is being made every day, friends.

None of these United States Presidents had ever held elected office, so Trump would join these names if he were to become president. However, as noted in the second column, all five of these men held important government positions and at least had experience as a leader in the military or government.

From Stanford University’s Center for Teaching and Learning: “A good question is both a question that your fellow students can answer and a question that requires analysis, synthesis, interpretation, and critical thinking in order to answer it. Your questions based on a particular passage should both encourage and challenge us to articulate and uncover meaning in the text. You don’t necessarily have to have an answer to your question (indeed the most interesting questions often don’t have a definitive answer), but you should think in advance about the kinds of answers your question may elicit in class.”

If you find yourself getting stuck when attempting to form questions, this chart might help. As Mr. Wilcox wants us to focus on doing the questioning ourselves, knowing how to form a helpful question is incredibly important. While yes/no questions can obtain simple information, the topics we learn about require more in-depth analysis to understand the complex issues they are made up of.

Disclaimer: I was absent Tuesday and Wednesday, so this is a lot of catch-up. Okay and on that note, here we go.

- The video doesn’t take into account the change in cost of living, which plays a role in how much people make. Ignoring that fact lessens the validity.

- “Society creates its billionaires”

- Trickle down theory is too difficult to manage and validate. It should be someone’s duty to give back, but how do you regulate that? There’s also the argument that by supporting a candidate whose policies support the poor is supporting the poor, but candidate views can change and policies aren’t created from one person. 

- Way too many variables and grey area to regulate most things. 

- Market society can put morals, values, and interests on sale. Continual argument: Where does it stop? What isn’t on sale?

I took this off an article from the Business Insider. You can read the whole article here, but I thought the chart deserved its own separate post. I like that it compares a large variety of sites and views, though I’m not sure what their definition of “mixed”. I also like the total because it shows who is trustworthy not just among one side, but overall. It can help when deciding where to get your information from.

The entire section covers different parts of interest groups. I especially like the reminder of pluralism, though I wish it had offered a more in-depth analysis in that pros and cons section. The quiz at the end might be useful in seeing what you actually understood of what we read. While this shouldn’t be the only resource used, it could serve as a useful review.

For those of you further interested in how SNL has portrayed candidates overtime, this covers Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin, Will Ferrel’s George W. Bush, and more. I find it incredibly fascinating how Fey’s portrayal actually affected the public’s view of McCain’s running mate. SNL has covered many of the defining moments since 1975 and presidential races are some of the most interesting. I also suggest Kate McKinnon’s Hillary Clinton (Here’s a taste) for a good laugh.
