Battlestar Galactica or The Tribe for dashboard osmosis
Battlestar Galactica:
-There’s...pilots. And a really really hot blonde lady pilot who punches things who I think is named Kara
-The President is an awesome lady who shoves people out of airlocks and has an admiral boyfriend
-They leave earth and go back to earth in the past because earth that they left was decimated by robots who can look like anyone and so they have to protect themselves against infiltration by the robots.
-The lady pilot has a slightly bitter golden retriever boyfriend who might be named Lee Adama (I think the admiral is his dad)
-Everyone says fracking a lot.
-It’s about justice and what that means and the impact of terrorism and stuff.
1, 4, 14, 19 (btw I found out about Katie Lynne Sharbaugh via your blog and have been listening to her recently released album a lot!)
I love that you found Katie through me! She’s such an incredible artist. I love her tone so much. Her album is great! “Tornado Warnings” is one of my favorites, and the reimagination of “Omaha” is stunning.
1. Song of the year?
This was my most played on Spotify this year!
In my mind, we’re in New York. You had never been before, but baby, now it’s our town.
4. Movie of the year?
Wicked 💚💖🧹
14. Favorite book you read this year?
Briefly Perfectly Human: Making an Authentic Life by Getting Real About the End by Alua Arthur.
Back when I was a keyholder/ASM at Yankee Candle (2016-2018), I’d turn off all the lights and handle closing tasks in the dark, counting the deposit while watching YouTube. I’d been watching a lot of Caitlin Doughty’s Ask a Mortician videos, and I remember seeing Alua featured in this video one night. She was the first person I’d ever heard described as a death doula. I had no idea that was a thing, but I felt immediately drawn to it. It was during a time when my paternal grandfather was dying, and in the midst of that, two of my dad’s sisters passed away, one just before my grandpa and the next right after. I found comfort in helping my dad with the arrangements for my aunts, but I had a lot of grief and anger and frustration that had nowhere to go. I knew that having a death doula would have been life changing for my family through all three of those losses, and when the experience of losing my maternal grandfather in March of 2020 confirmed that feeling, I started studying all about death doula work myself at the end of 2020.
I’ve taken a couple workshops with Alua Arthur and she’s just fantastic. Her book release and press tour were so exciting because it put a much-needed spotlight on deathwork. (If you want a great intro to her voice and perspective, her Ted Talk is beautiful. She has been so formative in my deathwork but also in my healing of my own death anxiety, especially surrounding my parents and maternal grandma.)
19. What're you excited about for next year?
This was the question that took me a few days to answer you. I’m excited for so much but I’m trying to take things day by day, to not feel stuck, and to find joy in the now because I can’t live in the future (as much as I’d like to).
I’m excited for my next chance to visit New York. I don’t have an idea of when that’ll be yet, but I can’t wait.
I’m excited to do the Coffee Master program at work, because it’ll strengthen and affirm my coffee knowledge and boost my resume as I look to transfer out of state.
I’m excited to take a couple of classes that start on the 14th. I’d really love to go back to school (especially if I’m looking to move in the near future) and this is the first step, but I’m tiptoeing. I’m trying to be really chill about this, keeping expectations and stress low, because school makes me so anxious. I haven’t told anyone I’m doing this (besides my therapist and now y’all) and I don’t plan on talking about it until the classes are done and I can convert them to college credit. (I’m taking them through ASU’s universal learner program where you pay $25 to access the class, and then you pay a $400 fee once you pass to put it on your transcript.) I need zero pressure, zero expectations. But I’ve gotta go for it and I’m feeling hopeful. 🙏🏻
And I’m hopeful that this is my last year living here. Every time I visit New York, I have more and more people tell me I need to move because I belong there. I’m excited for the year ahead and I hope every day leads me closer to a one-way ticket.
Happy New Year, friend! 🤗🎆
Incense, teacups, typewriter
Incense: List your three favorite scents.
Oh man, only three?? 🤔😅 I worked at Yankee Candle for a few years so creating moods with fragrance (especially with some mixology using multiple candles) is still something I really love. I tend to love really cozy, warm scents. I love an apple pumpkin vibe, especially if a buttery toffee or warm vanilla note is mixed in. I actually just bought a sugared cinnamon apple Yankee Candle yesterday, ha.
Next isn’t a candle, but I have a bath mix and a sugar body scrub by milk+honey that I love so fucking much. The scent is lemon, coconut, and vanilla, and it’s like a fresh baked lemon loaf. I love the scent so much that I wanna smell like it all the time, so I’ve been trying to find a complementary perfume. Next time I have a litle extra money for a treat, I really wanna try n,144 (Italian citrus, lemon, and vanilla) by noteworthy.
Okay, narrowing down a last one... oh, of course. I love the way my little dog smells after he’s been napping in a blanket fort all day. We always say he’s fresh baked when he wakes up. It’s that kind of corn chippy smell, lmao, but it smells like him and he has my heart. 🥹 He’s about to turn 14 and I wish I could bottle up his little scent and keep it forever.
Teacups: Favorite beverages?
This is gonna sound a little snobby 🫣 but I love love love cappuccinos when they're made well. 😅 I really love the velvety texture of beautifully steamed microfoam. It feels so cozy. I love breves too. White mocha, toffee nut, macadamia nut, and vanilla are my favorite flavors to add. And one of my favorite little treats is the strawberry milk made by Fairlife! I get the little 14 oz ones because they're 23g of protein without tasting like a protein shake (though their actual 30g vanilla and strawberry protein shakes are fantastic too).
Typewriter: If you had to come up with ten words to describe your life story so far, what would they be?
This question is what took me so long to answer you! I could barely narrow down the other answers, so choosing ten words is a struggle. 😅 But for my recent life:
“Realizing I deserve love and joy returned me to myself.”
✨✨✨✨

5. A time period I dislike or find boring: I typed up a giant long answer about how a lot of the time I just really really hate how a historical period is taught or presented rather than finding a time period uninteresting as such but I have to be honest, history about early (white) colonial australia is due to years of it being made so dull (and entirely white and male) is the least interesting thing to me.
6. HF I never expected to like as much as I do: Anne Boleyn. No lie. (I actually leaned towards neutral/dislike before The Tudors). I really did not think she’d capture my heart like that. Especially because The Tudor period in general had never been my thing. But the more I read about her the more the myth of her as this evil abusive manipulative horror was just...not the reality at all.
@disharmonious riiight that was so uncalled for. I've been a super big fan of Zeke but all the props to him for staying that calm holy smokes
