"Here." Whumper unlocked the cell door and pushed it open.
Caretaker's mouth went dry.
Whumpee lay sprawled on their back on the floor of the cell like a discarded doll, one arm bent at a sickening angle, a myriad of bruises discoloring their face and throat. Even from outside the room, Caretaker could see their breathing was shallow, and their eyes half-closed.
"What the hell happened to them?" The words fell from Caretaker's lips before they realized who they were speaking to.
Whumper shrugged. "Doesn't matter. Just patch them up. That's what you're here for, right?"
Before Caretaker could respond, they grabbed them by the shoulder and shoved them into the cell. The lock clicked behind them, but Caretaker was already running to Whumpee, dropping to their knees at their side.
"Whumpee! Are you all right? What happened?"
Whumpee flinched in surprise and cried out as the movement aggravated their shoulder. Now that Caretaker was closer, they knew it was dislocated, but not broken.
"It's okay!" Caretaker tried to keep their voice steady. "I'm here now."
"C… care… taker…? I… I can't… nngh… dizzy…."
"Shh… don't try to speak," Caretaker soothed. "I think you have a concussion---" As soon as the words left their mouth, they spotted an empty syringe on the far side of the cell, tossed away just as Whumpee had been. "Or drugged. Probably both."
"I'm… m… s… sorry…."
Caretaker forced a half-hearted laugh. "For what?"
"I… I can't… nngh… can't talk…."
Caretaker gently probed at Whumpee's injured shoulder, earning a hiss through their teeth.
"…hurts…."
"I know, I know…" Caretaker pursed their lips.
"Why… why're… why're you… looking… at me… like that…?"
"Can you do something for me, Whumpee?"
"I… I can try…."
"Take a deep breath in."
Whumpee obeyed.
With a swift, sharp motion, Caretaker shoved their shoulder back into place.
Whumpee let out a long, low whine. All they were capable of saying, with who-knows-what running through their veins.
"It's okay! You're okay now! Your arm is fixed---"
The cell door opened without warning, and Whumper stepped inside, seizing Caretaker by the shoulder. "Your job is done here."
"Wait!" Caretaker tried to pull away from them, back towards Whumpee, who couldn't do anything but watch.
But Whumper's grip was stronger than steel, and they hauled Caretaker out of the cell as if they were nothing, their pleas and shouts falling on deaf ears.
