Peter Pan 2023 Thoughts Part 1 Wendy Darling

I was not looking forward to this film for my guess was that they were going to make bad and unnecessary changes. Indeed I feel I was 100% correct. This was not a good Peter Pan.

Like most fans, when there is an adaptation of a piece of work that I enjoy. I hope for the adaptations to stay as close to the source material as they can. It’s why I enjoyed the 2003 film version so much. Disney’s 2023 Peter Pan and Wendy feels like they only borrowed the whole change of Wendy being able to swing a sword and turned her into a girl boss. So I will go through my issues with this film one characters at a time.

Wendy Darling

Wendy is the heroine of this story. Some  characteristics we all can say she has off the top of our heads are...

1) Kind

2) Mature

and most importantly

3) MOTHERLY

This girl has a strong maternal instinct which is important because motherhood and mothers in general have such a huge importance to this story. Now I can say that the 1953 Peter Pan isn’t perfect with staying 100% close to J.M.Barrie’s characters. However, the original Disney Wendy Darling at least has some recognizable characteristics to original J.M. Barrie Wendy.

This was the original Disney adaptation of Wendy Darling and like original Wendy she is a kind, patient, mature and motherly. These are traits of Wendy Darling. Yes off the bat when she first meets Peter I didn’t enjoy they made her into a doormat, but she does have traits that are recognizable to be Wendy Darling.

2003 Wendy is adventurous and a natural born story teller. She is also a tough girl who can swing a sword. However, even if this film is quick they at least didn’t have her just poof that ability out of thin air. There is a quick moment with Peter Pan giving her a quick sword fighting lesson. She is still a good adaptation of original J.M. Barrie Wendy because they didn’t trash that she is...kind, mature and motherly. She is also like most Wendy’s a good sister.

This Wendy only borrowed 2003 Wendy’s tough girl parts. What makes her stand out from other Wendy’s is that she is very unlikable and hardly recognizable to be Wendy. She is a bad sister from the start putting the blame immaturely on her brothers when she joined in on their sword fighting game. While most adaptations of Wendy are scared or intimidated at the inevitability of growing up, they don’t get a bad attitude and take it out on their parents. Heck, 2003 Wendy got yelled at by her dad but she didn’t feed in. Poor girl was pretty upset too.

2023 Wendy is following the Girl Boss trope and I hope that trope dies. All it does is make a female character unlikable and spits on all the male characters.

If I were to toss all adaptations of Wendy together, I can’t help but see 2023 Wendy being the group b**ch-w**ch.
