Project Overview

So it begins...

This tarot card project is one which my sister and I are undertaking together. Both of us have been involved with tarot for most of our lives, and we wanted to make a deck that really resonated with our own personal experience; one that would be easy to read without a booklet. And what better subject for two ‘90s kids than Disney movies!

We decided to structure the deck as follows: For each Minor Arcana card with a number, we chose a song from a Disney movie which fit the card in both lyrics and melody/mood. We plan to use some of the lyrics in our booklet of meanings (or booklet of essays, as it might turn out... we seem to have a lot to say about each card). Because almost all good Disney movies are musicals, this was a great way to pick specific movie moments. For the Court Cards, we chose a single character. Many of these ended up being characters from non-musicals, to ensure a good balance.

For the Major Arcana, we chose a couple or relationship for each card. Disney movies focus a lot on relationships, most of which are love stories, and we felt this was a great way to express the dynamics of the different energies present in each card. Originally, we set out to choose only romantic pairings, but quickly realized that familial and platonic pairings were just as important. (Anna and Elsa, Merlin and Arthur, Taran and Gurgi, etc).

Overall, we tried to include all of the classic movies from Disney Animation Studios. Of course this wasn’t possible, but we did get all of the classic fairy tales. Most of the films that got dropped were ones which has no influence on our childhoods (Make Mine Music, etc). or movies without a single story-line (Fantasia and Fantasia 2000). We tried to avoid 3D animated films and also Pixar movies, but of course Brave, Frozen, Tangled and a couple others managed to sneak their way in because the archetypes/imagery were too good. Obviously, there is some favoritism: Disney Renaissance movies have quite a few more cards than the rest, because films like Pocahontas, Beauty and the Beast, and Hunchback were pivotal for kids like us who were born in 1990.

In terms of artwork, one of us drafted the imagery for the cards and wrote the descriptions, while the other did the line-art and coloring. We tried to find a balance between the classic Rider-Waite symbolism, and the Disney imagery. If there was a natural visual affinity between songs/characters and tarot card imagery, it often influenced our decisions.
