"Is that a personal method of greeting?"
The echo was created. A shimmering sphere of nothing, about as large as a man's height. It couldn't be seen, but he knew it was there, as he'd been the one to create it; a taxing job even for someone of his calibre. It was a reflection of his own being after all, dumbed down to a manageable level, and made transient by its weakness.
And yet he'd still need to spend as much energy in undoing it once the agreed upon time was up. Only a few seconds, but years inside the spatial and temporal anomaly.
The black hole shrugged, a gleaming piece of metal falling from his sleeve into his hand. An old, dully gleaming locket. His payment. Now was as good a time as any, as he'd need the energy to stay in control afterwards.
Slender, clawed fingers spun the seemingly unremarkable piece of jewellery, threading the chain around themselves. The power this little thing held was palpable. It wasn't often that a black hole could even sense emotions, but that little locket held so much despair and sadness it had formed a magical field of its own.
He wouldn't open it, it hardly mattered what was inside.
Counting seconds until the echo was to be undone, the black hole unthreaded the locket from his fingers and lifted it up, placing it neatly on his tongue. It tasted acidic, bitter and salty, with the metallic tang of old blood. Barely any sign of the original materials in its flavour.
His mouth closed, and sharklike teeth, harder and sharper than anything in the universe, came bearing down.
Crunch.
'What and who I intend to leave in the echo is for me and only me to know until you actually create it. I don't want to risk any mishaps. I do hope you understand what I mean when I say I can't trust you.'
"Only a fool would trust a black hole beyond what’s immediately set in the deal. You’re far from a fool, my friend." He grinned, delighted that there was someone still who could be sensible in regards to him.
"I don’t need the knowledge either, and simply offer advice on the basis that I know these echoes as well as I do myself. The simpler ways to deal with them tend to work best."
'I see..' The King was silent for a moment, searching his mind for something that would be powerful enough for the Lord. Ah. He thought of something, the perfect gift. Reaching inside his robes, the Nightmare King pulled out a small locket by the chain, showing it to the black hole. 'Will this be strong enough?'
It looked almost mundane, innocent enough to pass for any piece of jewelry, but as so often was, looks were deceiving. Nero drew a deep breath, tasting the age of it, the care and attention and a myriad of emotions that had, in the timespan of aeons, evolved into a kind of unique magic.
It was powerful, all right. Someone had held it in much higher regard than their life for a long, long time.
"Yes. That's easily enough power to replenish what will be lost." The black hole smiled widely.
'Excellent. Is that a trick question? What could I offer that would be of worth to a noble black hole?'
<’There’s always something, my friend. Nutritional value is of little consequence in this case, as long as it holds power. I can’t be that specific since I don’t know your current resources.’><’Without one this task will take me very close to Hungering, and I have no desire to enter that state.’>
'My friend. Dearest Lord of depths of darkness. I have a favor to ask of you.. I need to create a place where time does not exist, where things can grow without needing the time of an outside world. A rift, if you will. Since you are an entity of such caliber, I assumed you could help me in this task.'
<’A place torn apart from time? It would take a considerable amount of power and energy, but yes, I could make a space like that.’><’What would you offer in exchange for it? Creating an echo of a singularity is not something I’m willing to do lightly, even for your request.’>
