RIP Prince Markie Dee 1968-2021
Rapper, musician and radio personality Prince Markie Dee has died at age 52. He was a founding member of the pioneering rap group The Fat Boys!
The NYC trio were such a huge part of the early days of rap and hip hop. Their beatbox, their humor, their sound - they were one of my favorite groups when I was 11. I’d put them up there with Run DMC and the Beastie Boys for rap pioneers. When I was about 10 or 11, I got the compilation album Rap’s Greatest Hits on tape. It featured so many gold standards of the early rap era including The Fat Boys’ “Fat Boys”. The 1987 goofy comedy film Disorderlies, starred The Fat Boys as, well... wacky orderlies. It was a fun movie I enjoyed at the time and I even got the movie soundtrack, which featured The Fat Boys pseudo cover of The Beatles’ “Baby, You’re a Rich Man”. There were several other cool hits including “Wipe Out” that they did with The Beach Boys, “Are you Ready for Freddy?” from A Nightmare on Elm Street 4, and “The Twist” with Chubby Checker.
In 2012 at around the time Prince Markie Dee was a radio personality in Miami, I noticed he was following the Twitter page for my documentary about V66, Boston’s music video TV channel. I was thrilled to see this since I remember Fat Boy videos on V66 and even tweeted about it.

Was shocked to hear the passing of Legendary hip hop artist @princemarkiedee . Markie Dee was a pioneer to Hip Hop when he was a part of Hip Hop group Fat Boys. During the 80s, Fat Boys made successful studio albums & started in three feature films. In the 90s, Markie Dee had a solo career as a hip hop artists, but he quickly became a music producer well into the 2000s. In the later years of his life, he became a DJ in Miami. Markie Dee unfortunately passed away a day before his 53rd Birthday. He was one of the first hip hop artists I listen to when I was a child, it was also great to see someone in the hispanic community to achieve success in the hip hop community. R.I.P.
