husband! robert witnesses one of your meltdowns for the first time
He froze for a second. “Uh… what happened?”
It had been one of those days. The kind where everything felt wrong for no reason.
You looked up, tears spilling again. “I don’t even know!” you said between sniffles. “I just— I dropped my coffee this morning, then my boss yelled at me, and then my favorite pen broke, and then I came home and stubbed my toe—” You took a shaky breath. “And now everything just sucks!”
Robert blinked. “The pen too?”
You glared through your tears. “Yes, the pen too!”
He tried not to smile, but it was no use. “Alright, okay. Come here.”
He sat beside you and gently cupped your face, thumbs brushing over your wet cheeks. “Hey, look at me.”
You shook your head. “No, I look gross.”
He tilted his head. “You look like someone who’s had a long day. Still cute, though.”
You sniffled again, trying not to laugh. “Don’t say that while I’m crying.”
“I’ll say it whenever I want,” he said, still holding your face like it was something fragile. He wiped another tear with his thumb, soft and slow. “You don’t have to hold it in, alright? Just cry if you need to. I’ve got you.”
You let out a small laugh between hiccups. “You sound like a therapist.”
He grinned. “Free therapy. Comes with the marriage license.”
You finally smiled a little, and Robert’s expression softened more. He leaned in and pressed a light kiss to the tip of your nose. “There we go,” he said quietly. “That’s better.”
You sighed, relaxing a bit in his hold. “Sorry for being like this.”
He shook his head. “You don’t have to say sorry for feeling things. You’re human. I’m just here to keep you from drowning in your own tears.”
“That’s dramatic.”
“Yeah, but it got you to laugh again,” he said, smirking.
You rolled your eyes, wiping at your face with your sleeve. “You’re annoying.”
“Yeah,” he said easily. “But you love me.”
You mumbled, “Unfortunately.”
He chuckled and kissed your forehead. “C’mon, let’s get you some water before you turn into a raisin.”
You laughed again, smacking his arm lightly. He just smiled, watching you with that calm look he always had — the one that made even the worst days feel a little lighter.
