     salem doesn’t move as the body is dropped to the ground behind her. she looks onward, the wind blowing her curls about her ivory face. her cape sways in the gentle breeze. “ruby rose.” she greets. “how i have  l o n g e d  to finally meet you.”

     she smiles as the beringel she’d sent on its task comes up to her side. she places a hand atop its head and pets it like one would a dog before she finally turns around to face ruby.

          “oh my...” she says softly. “you look so very much like your mother.” salem laughs gently. it doesn’t sound wicked, even coming from her. “i can see it--in the curve of your cheeks and the way your nose turns upward.” she continues. “and your eyes... not just the color, no... the same eyes, through and through.”

she’d been sitting on a bench in the courtyard, watching as others came giggling, entering through the ballroom doors. her teammates went on ahead, pyrrha being the last of them to get dressed, but even after she’d given herself time to prepare — she wasn’t ready. she’d been reminded of the pedestal she was placed on, how she was separated from everyone else: a line of thinking that she did her best to suppress, one that the boy in her mind had helped silence for the longest time. yet, she knows she made her choice: to encourage him to pursue someone he truly loved. 

her eyes move down to her lap, a sigh leaving her lips as she tries to settle her thoughts. her friends would worry if she didn’t show up. once she looks up again, her gaze finds the rose, struggling to walk straight. before she could speak in concern, she watches her trip — and almost immediately, pyrrha manages to stand and and help catch her.

     ❝ — are you all right, ruby ? ❞ she asks, helping her stand upright, and getting a glance at the heels she wore. ❝ i suppose it must be difficult for you to walk in those ... ❞
