Confirmation from Jason Rose himself that James Ironwood is mixed! Half-Asian, half-Caucasian, just like him!

JasonLeiRose: Hmmm, well since Monty originally kinda based him on me (after doing a low tech map of our faces at the office), I’d like to think he’s probably half Asian half Causasian like myself.

Do you ever see an art style and think ‘I know exactly which character would suit being drawn in that style’? Well, that happened to me when J.C. Leyendecker was mentioned in an art video I was watching and my brain immediately jumped to Ironwood. I’ve been contemplating trying to imitate his particular style for a while now, especially because of the challenge of replicating an oil painting with markers, and turning it into fanart seemed like a really fun way to do that.

This is largely a straight-up study of (one half of) a Leyendecker piece called ‘Couple in Boat’, but I flipped the image, swapped around some of the colours and obviously changed the face and the right arm rather a lot. There’s something highly entertaining about drawing a cyborg arm in an art style from the 1920s! I really enjoy that sort of anachronism.

They were rare treasures, moments like this. Times when they could put down the mantle of protector and champion of the world at the door, and simply be men. Visits from James were rare, as was the unavoidable reality of having a sea between them, and far too often the whole of his visits were spent on work. Updates on the progress of maidens, or Atlas’ newest defensive equipment. All too technical and official to allow more than a passing joke among the business. 

Thus, when they actually managed to leave the office at an hour that would allow a drink and moment of personal catching up between them in his apartment, the immortal did his best to  fully enjoy it, as he knew how fleeting such moments were. 

It was the ease that he would later blame for the words escaping past his lips.

          Work had become an inevitable part of James’ life. Moreso after being welcomed into Ozpin’s inner circle, after learning about… well, everything. How the Grim had come into existence, how magic wasn’t just a myth. How there were enemies lurking around every corner, people in the shadows pulling the strings. How the entire world was at risk and they were the only ones who knew the truth, striving to keep the darkness at bay. James had long since started preparing Atlas’ defenses, looking into new technology to aid them. Whatever he could do to prepare for the storm that would inevitably come.

          But just then, he was relaxed and at ease. Settled back in a comfortable armchair, sipping away at a batch of Ozpin’s cocoa. Chuckling over something or other, he didn’t rightly remember anymore. Not after Ozpin suddenly asked him a question like that, and James couldn’t help but lift his eyes to Ozpin’s, brow furrowing ever so slightly.

          ❝Is that even a question?❞ he asked after a small snort, setting down his mug and lacing his fingers together. Even now, his right hand was gloved, but it was more for his comfort than for anyone else’s. ❝We’ve known each other for years, long before we started working together.❞

          Still, Ozpin surely must have asked him such a question for a reason. ❝There’s something on your mind,❞ he said, trying to ignore the sense of disquiet starting to creep up on him.

          But what is a ghost, if not a spirit that can’t move on no matter how much it yearns to? A spirit that remains trapped in an existence it never asked for? Ozpin’s still there, somewhere. Buried underneath flesh and bone, laying dormant in the back of a young boy’s mind. He’s there, and yet... at the same time, he isn’t.

                                                  Because he’s unreachable, unattainable.

          What is Ozpin now if not a ghost that James can’t pull back to the surface no matter how hard he tries to? A ghost that’s nothing more than a memory, a memory James only has access to fragments of? Fragments he can’t hope to put back together, not even with Oscar’s help.

                              He wonders if Oscar prefers it this way.
