if ur prof can't figure out zoom within the first 15 minutes of class you're legally allowed to leave
Thing One’s class has been having “social lunch” calls this week while the kids are stuck at home. I was downstairs doing a supply check (I’m going to have to venture out to the grocery store tomorrow), and overheard part of the call, in which the supervising adult explained to one of the kids that he wasn’t a teacher, he was a child and youth worker. I’m torn between being happy that the board is taking steps like that, and worried because they are ENTIRELY right to be doing so.
I think that the kid in Thing One’s class who has been changing Thing One’s signups for one-on-one meets with the teacher is now aware that Google Docs keeps a revision history. (The teacher was already aware of the problem. But when Thing One ended up showing up at the same time as this kid, I was there to support her in asking that “since [other kid] changed my meet time, no, I don’t want to wait.”)
Gotta feel sorry for Thing One’s teacher. There’s one Google Meet per day (not the whole class, she’s split them into three groups). But given that I’m pretty sure that this class only has people who live in the city, I strongly suspect that the reason that a lot of them are in the asynchronous learning stream (i.e. officially it doesn’t need a computer) is just like us - their parents recognised that the kids would be better off without having to do 240 minutes of video conferencing each day.
So this class is going to be disproportionately made up of shy kids and kids with anxiety problems and kids with other difficulties focusing on a screen. So the teacher’s sitting there, trying to convince the class to participate (obviously she doesn’t want to have to just call names every time, especially not for the first person). I overheard “is everyone just typing their sentence into chat? No one wants to read it out?” today.

Studyblrs: I need help
Distance ed, online learning, external student
I see a lot of you guys are doing class not at school, I wanna know how.
I’m a pretty classical on campus student. I go to most lectures, my school has a big focus on practical learning and I super procrastinate. But I enrolled in summer school. In a distance ed class. While not my home uni, I have studied here before, so learning the system is not that big of a deal, nor is getting to campus for the practical workshop.
Am I going to look like a dick if i post in the forums? Will i if I do? Should I buy the textbook or use the super annoying online version? How the hell do you make friends in these courses? Find the people to message and be like “yo, which reading is it this week? ” How do I even study?
I mean, it’s a common sense/rules subject, so I’ll probably do well but ahhhhh?
