About 1.7 million children in the country are labourers, one in four of them 11 years old or younger, the agency's research shows. Girls, who often work as domestic labourers, rarely even show up in the statistics, UNICEF noted. In slums around Dhaka, children are evident working in tanneries, shipyards, tailoring, or repairing automobiles. Others labour at vegetable markets or carrying luggage in bus, train and boat terminals. Many say they once lived in the countryside, before being forced to the city.

India's migrant workers are the backbone of the big city economy, constructing houses, cooking food, serving in eateries, delivering takeaways, cutting hair in salons, making automobiles, plumbing toilets and delivering newspapers, among other things. Most of the country's estimated 100 million migrant workers live in squalid conditions. When industries shut down overnight, many of them feared they would starve. For days, they walked - sometimes hundreds of kilometres - to reach their villages because bus and train services were shut down overnight. Several died trying to make the journey. Some state governments tried to facilitate buses, but these were quickly overrun. Thousands of others have been placed in quarantine centres and relief camps.

Hardly the drug lords and criminals of Trumpian myth, most Mexican climate migrants are struggling rural people (not unlike Trump’s own supporters). They depend on predictable weather to grow the crops they eat. When they know the rain isn’t coming, or their home has been destroyed in a flood, or some other climate-fueled event has upended their lives, families face limited options: starve or move. Of the 7 million Mexicans who relocated between 2005 and 2010, perhaps 1.4 million came to the United States. In other words, only a fifth of Mexico’s total migrants crossed the U.S. border.

No one knows exactly how many people will be uprooted thanks in part to climate change. estimates range from 50 million to as high as one billion. It’s also challenging to predict which regions will be hardest hit. Southeast Asia, the Amazon Basin, and a lot of Africa are all vulnerable. Coastal areas and small island countries will face major displacement as sea levels rise. You can think of it this way: If one person is forced to leave home, that shift can feel world-changing.  When that upheaval happens on a global scale, it is.

When 65 million refugees have been forcibly displaced from their homes around the world, when patriarchy continues to subjugate women and issues like femicide are still the norm, when racist hate incidents and police brutality in the United States continues to soar with each passing day, when people’s medical and financial records continue to be surveilled in the name of cyber-security: one thing is clear, the rights of millions are currently in serious jeopardy. This constant infringement on people’s rights is a clear indication that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has failed.
