Hannah Experiences French McDonald's, Among Other Things
Okay. The last couple of weeks have been crazy. I hardly know where to begin. I will take this opportunity to mention that French food is amazing. My mom made a salad composed entirely of tomatoes and I liked it. With no other vegetables or meat or anything. And I don't like tomatoes. That said, I have been able to identify a few serious shortcomings in their diet. Firstly, no one eats peanut butter. Secondly, the milk is pasteurized at UHT (ultra high temperature)... which means that it is no big deal (well, to French people) if it is warm. Its taste also leaves something to be desired. Finally, their McDonald's do not have apple pies. Heartbreak.
School is hard. But it's also a good experience, because I take almost all of my courses with the same group of sixteen people- who seem to be very nice. I'm not stressed about passing, so I'll just do what I can. I'm in Terminale (which means the last year of high school, the one with the big important life-altering exams [well, for the French people]) Littéraire (like, liberal arts stream). So basically that means I'm taking an exorbitant amount of Philosophy classes, English classes, and French literature classes, among other things. French literature will certainly prove to be a challenge.
I've started playing basketball again. So far, so good. My shooting is... well, sketchy at best. But despite not having done any physical activity since my concussion in May, my fitness is good relative to the level of the team. They seem to do much less running (sprints, seventeens, suicides, etc.) than the Canadian squads. They also only practice three times a week. That said, I'm certainly not kicking anyone's butt... my basketball skills leave something to be desired. Anyway, we're still not sure if I'll be allowed to compete on the team, because they are only allowed one foreign European player. And I'm not European. So if I can't play with them, I'll just play with the lower-level team, I think, because in that case there will be no problem. Except for the showers! Hahaha. Oh, the European communal shower concept. Call me a prude, but I just can't do it.
