Our approach to hospital-acquired infection has to go under several generations of change: Himanshu Jain
Hospital Hygiene Trends:
The movement to the new technology and acceptance is much higher. Let me give you an example,10 to 15 years back knee surgeries and use of drug-eluting stents, change of body parts, liver transplant/organ transplant were far fewer in the country. Adoptions of new techniques for treating patients are coming very rapidly but the change in the hygiene protocol- a critical part of healthcare is much slower. We still use the same chemistry, the same method which we used 50 years back and it's not a surprise for me that the first superbug in the world is named after New Delhi because our approach to hospital-acquired infection has to go under several generations of change and not just one.
Hospital-Acquired Infection (HAI) Challenges:
In HAI the number one problem we have is, we do not have a standardized and uniform way of measuring and calibrating it. In many parts of the world, it is mandatory for the hospitals to publish the hospitals acquired infection rates and are required to follow certain protocol which should be verifiable and should be measured in a common standard way which we don't have in India.
Hospital Hygiene Breakthrough: Hospital hygiene has moved many notches up, i.e, moving away from the chlorine which is the mainstay of disinfection for many years. The new technologies have moved to accelerated hydrogen peroxide. Chlorine gives you dioxins, environmental damages, slow to act, very high consumption and harms the patients. To accelerated hydrogen peroxide which kills in less than a minute and can kill worst of germs, very easy to use and the components after the disinfection is water and oxygen. So from that perspective, we have come a long way but the adoption is very slow.
Diversey Journey So far: Diversey started in the late 90s as a part of Unilever India and in 2002 became an independent company with Jersey Johnson family in the US. In the year 2011, it got acquired by Sealed Air and we were a part of it as one of the division and now we are once again an independent company owned by Bain capital ventures globally. We were the first set of people to bring mechanized cleaning to the country. We were the first to bring a sight planning activity and the outsourcing industry in the country, to bring to healthcare an approach of managing acquired infection beyond the operation theatre. We think that everything happens in the Operation Theatre but if you look at the infections and the problems, they all arise outside much more than inside. Inside the OT, there is a doctor which is much more careful, takes care of many things, all protocols are much better practised. But the moment a patient steps out, the nurse, the ward boy, the person who comes to clean the room are they doing the right thing? Is the bedsheet you are washing is in the right place? Or are you using the same mop which comes from a high-risk area to low risk area? These are the things which impact the patient's health which leads to patients going home with two extra infections in which he/she came up with. Very simply put, it is easier to kill the bug outside the body than inside the body.
Diversey as Differentiators: We are the only supplier in the industry which provides end to end solution for all hygiene needs to any industry we deal with, this includes healthcare and pharma. I would like to give you a spectrum of how we impact, in a pharma industry we are trying to replace solvents with aqueous cleaning to make it more eco-friendly and much safer. When you use a low boiling petrochemical solvent for cleaning it causes a very high risk of fire in the space. When you prefer aqueous cleaning it takes the safety level to another level and there are industries in the country using it. A sterile IPA or sterile cleaning protocols for clean rooms which are high-level protocol when it comes to managing possibilities of infections where you are packing vaccines or biologics, things are at a very different level, especially on the pharma side. On the healthcare side, we have accelerated hydrogen peroxide solution called OXIVER, being accepted and used by many hospitals but as I said, slow to adapt.
Diversey Future plans: We will continue to create the market in the country, our effort is to bring the latest technologies, populate them and most of our products are manufactured locally. While we are a global company, 90% of our product is locally made and sold, what that does is, it gives us an extra edge over our competition when it comes to price competitiveness, speed of delivery, ability to adjust. We have a large R&D centre already, which we are expanding. One of our global technical centres is based in Mumbai which develops solutions for the globe with 50 scientists working with it fulltime. We have long term plans for the country and India is a jewel in the Diversey crown globally.

Flush me, Flush-Me-Not: this global company is helping India save 90pc of water in toilets through its waterless urinal system.
At present, India is facing the worst-ever water crisis with over 600 million people - nearly half the country’s population - suffering from extreme water stress according to a report by NITI Aayog. It also claims that 75 percent of Indian households do not have clean drinking water and 84 percent of rural households do not have access to safe piped water.
India ranks 120 out of 122 countries on the water quality index since 70 percent of its water is contaminated, which is causing the death of two lakh people each year.
Diversey, a global cleaning and hygiene company, is attempting to save this water through an innovative solution Flush-Me-Not, which serves as a comprehensive waterless urinal system. Not only does it reduce the usage of water in toilets, but it also helps control odour. Launched in 2014, Flush-Me-Not is already being used across 15,000 urinals in Indiaincluding the ones at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai, public restrooms around the Vaishno Devi temple in Kashmir, across multiple outlets of fast food chain McDonald's, and also in some branches of Delhi Public School.
How does Flush-Me-Not function?
The Flush-Me-Not package consists of 12 urinal screens made out of recycled polymer as well as four litres of concentrated odor eliminator.
“Before installation, the urinal needs to be cleaned with diluted descaling solution and a toilet sanitiser. This can be rinsed with water after a few minutes. The water supply to the urinal must be disconnected before placing the screen on the urinal drain. Finally, the odor eliminator should be sprayed on the surface. This can last for 30 days after which the screen and odor eliminator have to be replaced,” explains Aurodeepa Rath, Marketing and Assistant Manager, Diversey India.
Each Flush-Me-Not package costs Rs 6,000 and if used as per the standard procedure, can last for a month after using it in 12 urinals.

Himanshu Jain:-Diversey differentiates itself by being a solution provider, not a product provider. They collaborate with businesses by working in the interests of the company. The land and water resources of every country are different so the engineering of detergent making should be customized for particular region. Diversey has team of water quality testing who go out in the field to measure the iron content and other minerals which might affect the warewash and laundry operations.
HospiBuz: From a business point of view, which industry of India has major scope for Diversey?
Himanshu Jain:- Our facility management services are spread out in various segments into industries, office spaces like ITES (Information Technology Enabled Services) and co-working spaces, restaurants retail, infrastructure like airport and public sectors. As an industry leader we leverage our insights to create new opportunities that help service contractors expand their business. HospiBuz: We are witnessing that robotics technologies are now entering into the hospitality industry. According to you how it will change the hospitality experience for the guests?
Himanshu Jain:-Hospitality industry is growing at a fast pace and technology integration with the developing operations is a must. Diversey has introduced The Internet of Clean (IoC), a new platform which remotely monitors equipment, machines, and operations through sensor generated data. So of our products are:

IntelliDish helps in saving the time by monitoring performance & ensuring systems to function well in the kitchens for optimal efficiency. It turns data into dishwashing insights – sending data from your kitchen’s machines to an interactive dashboard and emailing alerts directly to your inbox.
Do you think that robots will able to deliver the level of hospitality what is being served by humans? It is said that hospitality is incomplete without Human touch.
When it comes to hospitality sector, we do not personally thing that robots are the future. Hospitality is all about the service you get along with the food you are served. No one would like to visit a restaurant to have a quick lunch or dinner, he/she would love the leisure time and enjoy the ambience and hospitality. However, In contrast robots are useful in fast food joints for instant food delivery to the customers.
HospiBuz: If we talk about the hygiene of India on a global level, our performance is below the line. What is the main factor behind this?
Himanshu Jain:- Awareness about cleanliness is the major concern in India. Since there is a lack of education among people, it becomes necessary to install adept equipment to improvise basic hygiene practices. Diversity in culture creates behavioral and transcultural issues because of which priority of people changes. When we take an overview of the Indian history, caste system plays a major role in the social stigma among people towards hygiene that it is not everybody’s job to do the cleanliness work.
Himanshu Jain:- People are now changing the pre-notion that certain caste is obliged to do the cleanliness task and leading to more self-sufficient way of living. Garima project, an initiative by Diversey is taking a step forward to train the janitors with proper equipment so that they don’t harm themselves from chemicals and do their job efficiently.
HospiBuz: If we talk about the Indian hospitality industry, then according to you where we are lacking in terms of hygiene and cleanliness?
Himanshu Jain:- We would like to skip this question
HospiBuz: Define Diversey in one word.
Himanshu Jain:-Safe
