how does raps feel abt turning varian away during qfad ?

forewarning. I haven’t started replying to this but since I feel strongly about this subject I think this is going to turn into a hot mess. It might not even make sense. Anyway, here’s Wonderwall.

Let me start off by letting everyone know, I adore Varian and I love the show. I appreciate the hard work that went into making it and the abundance of world building that I can now get my grubby spider fingers on. That being said I am biased in thinking that as well as the crew did there were a lot of misses and uncharacteristic actions made by all the characters in the show.

Now, I believe that the humanity of a character in fiction is ideal and that everyone is entitled to making mistakes. Rapunzel was stuck in a tower for 18 years like she’s going to make bad choices and I HOPE she does. I hope she continues to fumble because (as seen on this blog) I live for that but the way Rapunzel treated Varian in qfad and then continued to treat him is, frankly, so unlike her it almost felt like she was another character entirely. 

Even within the show’s formula, we see Rapunzel being OVERBEARINGLY helpful. She’s quick to trust Lance, she can’t help but play nurse with Cassandra when Cass hurts her leg, she goes out of her way to make sure Attila isn’t send off for a crime she knows he didn’t commit. Rapunzel wants to do s o o o oo o good but when it comes to Varian it stops at a broken promise? B O O O O O I I II I I .

I GET IT. Rapunzel feared her parents were dead and she was now queen after only less than a year of learning to be a… idk, a PERSON? Because let me tell you after years of locking myself in my room with no friends as a kid I STILL don’t know how to properly be a person so imagine being Rapunzel who was locked up for EIGHTEEN with only a mother figure, a chameleon, stray animals, her walls and the stars for comfort. She’s only just starting to live and now she has the survival of a KINGDOM to worry about. The fact she managed to act with as much strength as she did is incredible!  There was obviously so much as stake. Again — her parents were missing, she sent out her boyfriend and his best friend to find them with the high chance that they too would be lost and then she has Varian telling her his father needs help? On top of the rest of the kingdom? She had to make a choice and she made the right one as MUCH as it pains her. But the facT that she doesn’t 1) clear up his name because he did NOT attack her 2) go to him AFTER everything was settled is incredibly detrimental to her character. 

Rapunzel making a promise she couldn’t keep is an AMAZING arc for her because we all know how important promises are to her. After gfad Rapunzel would have, in my opinion, and once everything settled, gone to see Varian and noticed he’s gone or had an argument with him or something. She would have tried to reason with him OR even BETTER he would have pretended everything was alright and pulled the spotlight from him. It would have made him a far better villain and been a stronger punch in the gut when he was exposed as being an antagonist. The rest of the show would have been untouched but because we don’t get that interaction it untangles the rest of the story for me. It doesn’t make me root for anyone tbh and it makes Rapunzel harder to appreciate. I’m not saying that she’s perfect and needs to be a flowery sunshine all the time because she doesn’t in the least! But i’m not a fan of using one character to elevate another when it hurts the first.

It must have been so painful to for her to watch him turn his belief in her rotten before her very eyes. YOU PROMISED echoes in her head again and again and again. She cannot bear for someone she loves to not love her back, Rapunzel NEEDS to be like, or at the very least needs the resolution (as seen with Monty) or to resolve it herself.  She’d be heartbroken. She WAS heartbroken as if things couldn’t get any worse her FRIEND hates her now and she truly truly believes he hates her.

So why wouldn’t she go to him once the biggest, baddest, problem is resolved?? ? ? ? ?
