A soft breeze blew through a midnight field, black earth revealed as the air rustled star dotted blades of grass. Part of the only place of any real beauty in what was a plane of nightmares. The ground trembled slightly before the lightly ruffled grass was all at once trampled as a powerful black steed galloped through the field.
Glowing blue eyes were wide as the stallion tossed it’s head in excitement as it came to a halt before a fence, stardust flying from its glowing mane as the woman seated atop ran a hand over the velvety neck.
“Finished riding so soon my queen?”
The deep voice made the woman start slightly, turning to look down at the figure clothed in ripping darkness below.
“I wished only for a small break.” She dismissed, hopping down lithely as her hand came to settle in his outstretched one as she added with a smirk, “Am I already so missed?”
Her hand was brought up to meet pale lips as the man before her pressed a lingering kiss to the top, a slight smile making his lips twitch.
“Can I not come to see my love in moments of freedom?” He questioned, earning a laugh.
“Erebus, you are many things but an idle amusement seeker is not one of them.”
The god of darkness tilted his head, a smirk fading into a more solemn expression as he tucked her hand over his arm and they started towards the towering black spires in the distance. Darkness trailed in their wake, midnight mixing with shadows.
“Tartarus has become restless, a millenia our brother has remained in his slumber and he has centuries more before he wakes after our last war. Yet something has changed, this is not the waking restlessness we have come to know from him and Gaia. This is a disturbed one, something is rousing him before his time.” The guarded apprehension in his tone made star dotted eyes narrow.
“I roam through my domain constantly, my brothers stirring is not one I would have missed.” She stated cooly.
Erebus shook his head slightly, eyes distant.
“I know, but for you to have seen you would have to be here. Something is strange about this, whatever is causing this comes only at night when you venture into the overworld. It is as if…”
“As if they are avoiding my notice.” She finished for him, claw-like fingernails digging into Erebus’s arm ever so slightly.
Before them the spires grew, connecting to a immense palace that stretched further than any natural eye would be able to see. Both deities were lost in their own thoughts for a moment, before unusual activity at the entrance caught their attention.
“Mother!!!”
The shriek was followed by some of their children pouring out of the palace, harmed in varying levels and panicked. Explanations were garbled as voices stacked upon each other till one of her sons stumbled to the front to speak over the din.
“They came under the mask of beings of night, but upon entering they’ve begun to wage war!! One-” A wail echoed out from the wide open doorway to the Castle of Night cutting off the young god before her.
Erebus rushed to their children, his focus upon healing. He could fight, but one needed to stay, and whoever this enemy was had come into his wives domain.
The stars within her eyes flashed, rage twisting pale features into a murderous snarl as the woman turned to her home. Mercury silver wings thrust open as she burst into the main hall and with a mighty flap shot up into the air.
“Who would dare to lay siege to the Castle of Night?!”
Her voice boomed like thunder, night rolling out from her over the battle below as the odd warrior garbed in bright yellow faltered in the face of her fury.
Hundreds of beings not her own dotted her halls, auras of the overworld unmistakable within a domain of darkness. They had come with the intent to cripple her forces, hit her for reasons she neither knew or understood. Her body trembled with emotion as she looked below to her slain children as they faded to be reborn far within the depths of the abyss, minor deities of darkness who had no quarrel with these unknown forces.
Warriors that had come on deception to where she kept the peace, killing unprovoked.
Several of the largest banded together, looking up with defiance.
“We come as messengers from the true rulers of this world!! Too long since their triumph you have stayed down here, hiding from their greatness and taking authority that no longer belongs-”
It was all at once that the shouted message was silenced, as with a mighty roar Nyx flung her arms out. The night wrapped around them like vices, rending them apart like paper. Her eyes pulsed with a supernatural light as she dove down, those not killed by her power were ripped down by her claws before she came to a stop in the center. Ichor covered the floor and was splattered upon the wrathful deity, Erebus entering the hall moments later with her spawn behind him.
Horror wreathed his face as he looked around at the carnage. They were no strangers to violence, but for this to come to their home as it had was like nothing they had seen.
“Who-”
He trailed off, and Nyx reached down to one of the fallen. Fingers wrapped around the arm of one of the enemy, yanking the fallen up as her eyes took in a strange symbol marked on the arm.
“The gods above.” Nyx flung the enemy body down once more before stalking across the floor towards the dark god on the other side. “Someone up there has become drunk on power, power far beyond their means. Even Kronos knew better than to challenge me, to challenge the power within Tartarus.”
“They have forgotten who we are, why we were feared.” Erebus murmured.
Nyx scanned the room, those injured stirring and rising on shaken legs. Her teeth ground together and fingers curled into fists.
“We are primordials, their forces cannot tame us. I will find who did this…” The voice of night dropped into a poisonous whisper as she stared ahead.
“When I do, I will raze their domain till not even ash and rubble is left.”
