Beach 93rd, Rockaway Beach, Queens. [Erik Schmahl, 2012] I took this photo from the second floor balcony of my grandparents' house. Hurricane Sandy moved the historic boardwalk off its foundation and across the parkway. About seven days later the DOS began breaking up the massive mess of wood and debris. No power, early mornings, an interesting intersection of calm and tension. I liked the light.
