Extreme Pressure – Rockler Piston Clamps

Great clamps are a must in any workshop, especially a woodworking shop. I have lost count of how many I actually own but when something like the f-style piston clamp made by Piher comes along, I need a few more. What is that old saying? “A woodworker can’t have too many clamps.” Well, I would disagree with that statement a little, but you need to have the correct number of clamps for your workload and most importantly you need to have the right style of clamp.

With the famous Rockler blue, this f-style piston clamp is made exclusively for Rockler by a Swiss company called Piher. They have been making products for more than 50 years with incredible innovation along the way. The f-style piston clamps is packed with some incredible features.

Double-Threaded Piston System

The ingenious double-threaded piston system produces faster clamping speed and greater clamping power than compared to a standard f-style clamp. When the user spins the handle, the two screws work in tandem to increase the clamping speed. This means you won’t be sitting around waiting for the clamping head to get to the workpiece. The piston is restricted from spinning which prevents the clamping action from introducing misalignment when clamping up any sized items. With the piston covering the top screw, it is protected against glue, dirt, moisture so the smooth clamping motion will last a long time!

Cold Rolled Steel Bar

Typically, standard f-style clamps have steel bars as well, but they rely on a little more engineering rather than built to a higher standard. The cold rolled steel bar on f-style piston clamps are beefy and robust. Seriously, I have not seen another clamp with this hefty bar on it. Quite impressive!

2,000 Pounds of Clamping Pressure!

Yes, they claim 2,000 pounds of clamping pressure. Now, I didn’t have a scale to actually test the numbers but I can confirm with my woodworking experience that these clamps produce the most real world pressure from any of the clamps that I own. This is wonderful but it also causes some concern. These clamps do not come with clamping pads, which means the top jaw and the piston are unprotected, or should I say your work is unprotected. With a few tests in the shop, I clamped up some plywood and 2×4’s and with some extreme clamping pressure applied, it absolutely left marring on the surface of my material. Invest in the clamping pads or prepare to use cauls in the shop to protect your workpiece.

Swiveling Handle

The unique handle comes from the Maxipress f-style piston clamps by Piher. This handle is extremely creative and handy to have. Not being able to turn the clamp or get enough pressure to close a few stubborn gaps during a glue-up is a woodworkers worst nightmare. The swiveling handle on these clamps allow you to get impressive leverage to apply even more clamping pressure to your workpiece. I like the swiveling handle concept but I like the implementation and design even more! There are no pins, sliding levers, or complicated mechanism to swivel the handle. You simply swivel the handle and the metal bar registers on a few different points on the handle. Simple. As. Pie. I love it!

4 3/4″ Throat Capacity

With the 4 3/4″ throat capacity, you will have plenty of reach to get the majority of your clamping needs completed. I have to be honest, I wish they had a bit longer reach as their robust construction can most likely handle it.

Maybe they will come out with an extended reach model?

Cast Iron Brake

F-style clamps are notorious for having a lower jaw that is cumbersome to move. It is even more annoying when you are in a glue-up and the movable jaw slips when you apply too much pressure. On the f-style piston clamps, you no longer have that problem due to the cast iron brake on the lower jaw. This brake will prevent the lower jaw from slipping with the aid of a few serrations. I am curious on how long those will last with heavy use. But don’t worry, a lifetime warranty has you covered.

Lifetime Warranty

It is always nice when a product is back with a lifetime warranty. I don’t think Rockler has anything to worry about, these clamps are the superman of clamps. But in case something happens, you have the peace of mind knowing the company you purchased it from and the manufacturer have your back!

Conclusion

If you are a f-style clamp lover or you need them on specific clamping tasks every now and again, these are right for you. Don’t get me wrong, these clamps will last day in and day out based on their construction and my first hand look at them. But they are an f-style clamp and that means semi-limiting applications for a high number of folks in the serious or professional woodworking shop. Yes they use the f-style clamps too but they tend to use parallel clamps more.

With that being said, I use parallel clamps a lot! Nearly 85% of the time but when you need the f-style clamp, why not have a solid, rugged, and completely capable clamp to do the task and do it fast. I have two clamps in the 3 different sizes that are available. I may end up picking up 2 more of the smaller ones, that is where I see myself using them the most.
