A summer tale....ehm dress

Immediately when I saw this floral chiffon I had a dress idea in mind.

However this involved quite a bit of ‘construction’ since I didn’t own any similar pattern. (So much for easy sewing...)

I started with the skirt, which is just two quarter circle skirt sewn together.

Then on to the bodice:

I did not draft the bodice pattern from scratch but rather used the free RALPH PINK bodice block as a base (unfortunately only comes in a UK Size 8)

First step was to close the shoulder dart:

This was done by cutting the pattern open along the straight line connecting the two darts and then taping the shoulder dart shut (causing the waist seam to open up).

Since I wanted a wrap bodice I had to lengthen the center front to extent over the other side of the bodice. I simply drew a straight line at approx. a 45° angle starting from the highest point of the neckline down to the waist.

The result looked something like this:

Next step was to add width to the shoulder and waist seam:

For that I divided the pattern into four pieces and cut them open and added how ever much width I saw fit*

*I actually ended up adding way too much width and had to take some out again!

This was the end result for the bodice front and the pattern I used for my first mock-up shown above.

Now I need to draft a bodice back pattern and perhaps a waistband.

The deer plush pattern is now available. Designed to be made with minky, it also works just fine with fleece (though it will be taller and fatter in the body), and could probably also work well with cotton on the gussets. It does not call for an armature and, when sewn properly, can balance fine on its own with just firm stuffing. However, you may wish to add it if you have troubles making it stand. Everything must be lined up and sewn neatly to achieve the effect. Any slips or twists in the fabric can cause the legs to not stand properly which is why this pattern is rated as advanced.
