While some card games offers different formats to limit the card pool and offer a healthy metagame, in here we only have the banlist to do so. This offers players to play every card available up to this date, but as more cards are released more will be added to the list depending of their performance. Recently, along the usual banlist updates to return cards which were unfair or part of a combo in the past, the most broken cards are getting new reprints with tweaked effects so they are once again available. They might have lost their powerful pressence on their peak, but most of them are efficient enough to stand out.

"Dark Magician of Chaos" arrived along many cards starting to considerably power creep the game, making the use of the banlist more important than ever. During his debut, "Dark Magician of Chaos" was a powerful combo card due his ability to retrieve Spell Cards each time was summoned. However on the lattest reprints he lost what was most used for, and now instead recovers a Spell Card during the End Phase of a turn he was summoned as well only able to use this effect once each turn. He might not pull out the insane setups he became popular for, but is still an useful effect to recover key cards with. Everything else about "Dark Magician of Chaos" remains the same, with the ability to banish any monster defeated in battle as well banishing himself once leaves the field. Overall, while has lot his role in combos constantly recycling the same Spell Card over and over, is still an effective Spellcaster to work arround the effects that offers.

Despite his high Level, "Dark Magician of Chaos" has many options to arrive on the field with ease. The most known among players is "Dedication through Light and Darkness", a Spell which tributes "Dark Magician" to replace him with "Dark Magician of Chaos" from nearly anywhere in the game. A more recent alternative is "Chaos Scepter Blast", which once destroyed will summon the Spellcaster from the Deck. If we play arround Spellbooks, "Temperance of Prophecy" makes things even easier by tributing himself to summon him from the Deck. If on the other hand we focus on Xyz Summons, we can play along "Ebon High Magician" until is defeated so replaces himself with "Dark Magician of Chaos" while destroys a card in the process. Since the new effect interestingly solves the timing problems the original card had, we can play along "Magical Dimension" to shortcut his arrival as well destroy a monster in the process. Obviously there's revival effects to easily obtain this monster from the Graveyard, from a basic "Call of the Haunted" to "Dark Renewal" trading monsters from both sides of the field as a cost. Finally remember that "Dark Magician of Chaos" banishes himself once leaves the field, but that doesn't make him harder to come back if we play with effects such as "D.D.R. - Different Dimension Reincarnation" or "Escape from the Dark Dimension".

Although has lost his gamebreaking combos, "Dark Magician of Chaos" still has lots to offer for his user. Retrieving a Spell Card might have been incredibly delayed compared to the original effect, but is still an efficient ability to recover key cards like "Raigeki". He'll most likely have a more prevalent use along "Dark Magician" nowadays, as the famous Spellcaster has an incredible array of summoning options so we can quickly prepare "Dedication through Light and Darkness" to answer opponent actions or even declare consecutive attacks with. "Dark Magician of Chaos" is not just about recovering Spell Cards, as any advantageous battle will banish enemies and thus disrupt most Decks we confront. However keep on mind that despite "Dark Magician of Chaos" strong pressence is actually a very fragile monster, as no matter how leaves the field (Going from destruction to an effect like "Compulsory Evacuation Device") will be banished in the process. If that makes you worry, it can be solved either working along "Imperial Iron Wall" forbidding banishing mechanis (Therefore nullifying "Dark Magician of Chaos" attacks) or simply using him as Xyz Material so can go to the Graveyard without problems.

Obviously "Dark Magician of Chaos" won't be the fearsome combo tool he was popular for many years anymore, but is still a respectable monster to work arround with. Now with all the support arround Spellcasters and "Dark Magician", "Dark Magician of Chaos" isn't any harder to bring out under any circumstances. His most famous effect might've been nerfed, but is still valuable to retrieve important Spell Cards for later use. Last, banishing opponent monsters is a threat in a game so encouraging on Graveyard options. However the same goes for "Dark Magician of Chaos" himself, as can be easily taken down and harder to retrieve back as banishes himself. Yet, now with three copies available compared to his limited status back on his glory days, "Dark Magician of Chaos" provides a strong offense along solid coverage for his arrival and abilities.
