Rewatching “Operation: POOL” because it’s such a great episode, and I have some thoughts.
The mirror counterparts are complete opposites in morality, personality and relationships. E.g. Numbuh -4 isn’t just evil, he’s a coward deep down where Wally is brave. The negative Sector V aren’t friends. They think the opposite of each other - Numbuh -5 isn’t cool, Numbuh -2 is funny. So since Father’s counterpart is loving, affectionate and concerned for his kids’ wellbeing… that has horrifying implications about the poor Delightful Children.
I am only now realising that the name Little Traitor Dudes, as in defectors from the DNK, is Sector Z foreshadowing. Presumably they chose willingly instead of being brainwashed, because Daddy wouldn’t do that and everything is opposite here. Even the day and night cycle! Maybe the hivemind thing was inflicted by the DNK trying to control them? Or they’re just doing it as a bit.
Also a clever detail that Daddy lives in a trailer instead of a mansion. Maybe his own father (presumably an amazing guy) didn’t have nearly as much wealth to inherit; or if Father earned his fortune then I guess sentimental good pays a lot worse than ruthless evil. That… makes sense, unfortunately. Life isn’t fair. That’s why we need the KND!
The first DNK device we see explicitly has “lobotomy” and “torture” in the name. Those drills are meant to go through your skull. Jesus Christ.
The “broccoli mines” -4 sends his prisoners and faulty operatives to work in are darker too in light of “Operation: IT”, where broccoli is poisonous to kids, even by proximity. It weakens them like kryptonite. Like real radioactive minerals that can indeed be mined. And based on how the portal technology can be transferred, the laws of physics are same across dimensions. Firstly, that’s a painful and dangerous job for enslaved children. Secondly, what do the DNK want with all that toxic material? They do have missiles ready to fire on the average tree-fortress, and they threaten and hurt kids but not adults, so…
Lots of sweet Nigel and Lizzy in this episode! I personally prefer Nigel/Rachel to be endgame, but I like when Lizzie gets to be a good character and friend who Nigel does care a lot about.
Wait, is Eizzil openly being in the DNK foreshadowing for apparent civilian Lizzie secretly being in the Galactic KND? Either way, it lines up. Wait is there a Galactic DNK? Do they still think adulthood is a virus, but aim to somehow spread it and give adults privilege and freedom?
Very fun that Nigel immediately pegs Numbuh -86 as a softie under a thin layer of bravado, who’s easily influenced by both fear and kindness. “You’re 86’s opposite? …Can you do us a favour?” And it works! Goes to show that while Fanny might be too stubborn and close-minded sometimes, she has the opposite strength of never stooping to betray her morals and her cause. Her allegiance is right and she’ll never change it, while her counterpart is on the wrong side but also open to change.
The DNK logo has -4 in the middle, giving everyone two thumbs down, and -1 at the edge. -2 has a closed fist raised. -5 is just holding a bat or club and -3 has what looks like a giant double-sided axe? It definitely suggests blunter, more brutal violence than the whimsical 2x4 weapons. And it’s nice attention to detail, especially for something you have to pause the video to really appreciate.
I love Wally so much! “It’s called being a friend!” He recognizes that Kuki isn’t herself first! He fights all his teammates’ counterparts, the DNK’s finest who are used to fighting dirty and mercilessly, and wins on his own! He faces his fear of swimming and figures out -4’s weakness right away! My BOY! He really earned that sand party in the credits.
