Az narrowed his eyes, studying her. “Do you, though?” she pressed. “Sing?” Azriel couldn’t help his soft chuckle. “Yes.” She opened her mouth to ask more, but he didn’t feel like explaining. Or demonstrating, since that was surely what she’d ask next. So Az jerked his chin to the sword dangling from her hand. “Try cutting the ribbon again.””

Let’s break this down.

First of all, when Gwyn asks him “do you sing?” he was surprised. If it was a regular occurrence to associate him being a Shadowsinger (a shadow wielder) with a singer (musical), he wouldn’t be surprised, he’d be used to this sort of questions. With this very first sentence, you understand that Shadowsinging isn’t regularly associated with musical singing. Two different things.

When Gwyn asks him if he’s a Shadowsinger because he sings, he tells her that he’s a Shadowsinger because that’s what he is, not because he sings. If Shadowsinging was the same as regular musical singing, he would’ve answered “yes”.

To drill this difference deeper, SJM has Gwyn asking him further if he sings (musically - because he already told her that he’s not a ShadowSINGER because he sings), and he says “yes”.

When he changed the subject to avoid a demonstration, he knew she was going to ask him to sing - musically. She had seen him before handling his shadows and there was no singing involved.

We have seen Azriel in his POV talk to his shadows, not sing to them. Or did y’all read “ShadowSINGER” and took it at face value?!?? He’s a Shadowsinger in the same way there are Horse Whisperers (they don’t actually whisper to horses). Whoever says that they associated Azriel with music before ACOSF is a liar.

His shadows don’t react to every music either. The “song” of the Cauldron made his shadows recoil, just like they do for Elain. Bryce’s “music”? Incorrect. She played them song after song in that cave and the shadows didn’t react at all. When the phone had already died, they just reacted to Azriel’s mood and danced around him while he hummed. They did react to Gwyn, tho, but we all know what’s going on there.

It’s funny how some of the theories going around won’t stand up to a simple text structure analysis, isn’t it? Stop reaching trying to make singing for E/riel happen. It’s a Gwynriel thing.
