Dizzy for Dockets!
You may think weāre āBarney,ā but weāve found so much ātubularā stuff by āsurfingā through dockets.Ā Formally, a docket is an āofficial register of proceedings in a legal cause.ā For an archivist, they are an excellent tool. The National Archives holds over 869,000 feet of records created by the federal courts (nearly 68% of our collection in Riverside), and a good many of those records are case files.
Dockets provide more than an index, which lists party names.Ā It shows the charges or issues at hand, as well as a run-down of all the things filed in the case, which shows whether the case was big or small, appealed or settled and can show the names of people who were deposed, dates of the trial, lots of goodies!Ā
Letās walk through a docket.Ā Here is the docket for a criminal case heard in the Southern District of California (San Diego) in 1946: United States v. Escondido Lemon Association and Reginald G. Beck. What could be criminal about lemons, you ask?Ā Just look a little more closely and you will see: 22 counts of employment of child labor. Yup. Bad juice.Ā Ā
The docket shows Mr. Beckās plea of nolo contendere or, āI didnāt do it, but Iāll let you say I am responsible for these events,ā on 10 counts; that he was sentenced to probation for 2 years, but that probation was terminated after 4 months.
