Description of Piece:
This semester I got to focus on the Artist—Sheila Hicks. She is an artist known for her incredible installations that bring people great joy! I loved learning about her and her purpose for creating art. As I was researching her, I realized that we have very similar reasons to create art. In my own art, I want to focus on bringing people Joy and overall make a good impact on people as well as spreading Jesus’ light. Sheila Hicks kind of does the same which was so fun to discover! It’s interesting how she stood out to me amongst the long list of artist names! It’s like she chose me!
To represent a piece in communication with her artwork I decided to take the route of making a wall hanging. Sheila makes a variety of different types of wall hangings (she calls her minimimes). So, from her work I had the inspiration of creating my own with emphasizing on a variety of different textures like she does. In my work I combined weaving with knots, and loops to create a piece that really looks fun and vibrant with life.
I titled this piece “You are My Sunshine,” partly because of the use of my colors. I think that the color scheme I chose resembles happiness and kind of the joy that comes from our inner child self. As Sheila creates her art, she makes it a point to always see how children view her work because if they like it, then she has a bigger chance to bring out the inner child in adults when they view her work. As for my art piece, “You are My Sunshine,” I wanted to capture that same essence. I titled the piece this because when I was little girl, my mom would always sing to me the song “you are my sunshine.” And I feel like this piece takes me back to those childhood memories.
In the future when I have kids of my own, I want to hang this in one of their rooms because I feel like it brings the love and joy that I felt, when I was little. And plus I think it’s really cute ;).
Overall, I had so much fun making this piece! Thank you Tina!
