Dodengang, Trench of Death
Dodengang, also referred to as the Trench of Death, is a preserved trench along the Yser Canal near Diksmuide Belgium. The Belgians dug in during the 1914 Battle of the Yser and spent the duration of the war fighting to prevent further German advance. A demarcation stone at the north end of the trench system shows the furthest advance point of German forces. The German Army was able to cross the Yser and set up a bunker system just a few yards away from the Belgian trench line. The remains of these bunkers still stand.
The site was closed when I stopped by but I was still able to see most of the interesting areas. It’s hard to imagine spending four years living in the ground next to this canal. Conditions had to be horrible for both armies.
