Re: that Victor Hugo fact check.

The ISBN refers to the 1972 book, Choses Vues, which is two volumes long, about two thousand pages, and contains excerpts from Juliette Drouet's (Hugo's mistress) diary as well. The French version you found online seems to be one of the earlier editions. According to Wikipedia, the 1887 version purposefully left out some of the more personal writings.

I'm not positive which edition the English version is translating, but it's less than five hundred pages so I think it's safe to assume it's not the 1972 edition either.

I don't have time at the moment to really look for the 1972 edition and check, but I would guess what the source is referencing is either something purposely left out of the earlier editions or something his mistress wrote about him instead of something he wrote about himself.

That makes sense, thank you so much for looking into this! It was hard to find much about it in English. I'm going to add to the post to reflect this, and if any French speakers able to find and check the 1972 version, you'll have my gratitude.

ah jeez I think I probably hold a fair number of unpopular opinions, but to begin: Steve's kinda mean. And he's comfortable with that. This persistent pettiness and thoughtlessness when it comes to other people, even as he progresses through his arc of self improvement and thoughtfulness feels more true and more essential to his core character than is often given credit for - if its given credit at all, and isn't dismissed outright as fully a social coping mechanism or exists as a product of social pressure from less tasteful friends. Steve's had to learn a lot about himself over the years, but I don't think he's unearthed a fundamentally, structurally, essentially different person than the shithead 16 year old we met in season 1. Steve was a bully, and he isn't that anymore - he actively tries not to be that anymore. But that doesn't mean he's not still just a little mean because he chooses to be a little mean. Steve's kind of mean and petty because that's just how he interacts with the world, he's cynical and judgemental but these days its pointed a little more inwardly than it used to be - hell, his and Robin's number one social export is being little haters together - and it can, and does, coexist with the acts of platonic care he routinely expresses in his bitchy Steve way.

If definitely pulled on some real weird threads in my time but most recently, when I was writing dog at the door, I was doing a lot of research about folklore and symbolism surrounding dogs and I went down this huge rabbit hole about how that folklore intersected with rabies and what we as people understood about the disease contemporaneously to that folklore. I think only a little of that body of research actually made it, literally and directly, into the text itself. At least not with the kind of nuance I ended up getting into with the research. It was really interesting scientifically and sociologically but was fully unnecessary to the very unscientific metaphor I was trying to make with that information. So to the cutting room floor it went.

All comments is good comments! But I do really love it when readers are able to articulate what was emotionally resonant with them, or connections to their own lived experiences that brought more weight to the work in their experience with it.

👁️👄👁️ kjshk ehm. my wildest head canon... i don't think i have one (i'm not good at superlatives, i'm actually the most boring person uh)

i wouldn't call it wild, per se, but steve definitely lies down on the floor regularly. for stimming purposes, just to calm down, just to vibe, it doesn't really matter. that boy is getting a regular helping of floor time and everyone's on board with it (dustin, el, eddie and robin regularly join him)

hm. if we're talking favourite fic ever, that's settled in the witcher fandom (and isn't even finished 😭 i hope i can finish it at some point).

if we're talking stranger things, it's a strong tie between the tattoo shop au because everything is beautiful & nothing hurts, trans eddie and sweet sassy sunshine steve

chrissy sends eddie to a tattoo shop and eddie is bewildered when he finds that steve from high school is the owner. he wants to hate it, but he didn't account for how amazing steve is and how easy it is to crush on him. again.

and the time travel au because everything hurts, there is so much grief and survivor guilt and it started as a little puzzle for my brain that has spiralled out of control

Everyone dies in the battle against Vecna. Everyone but Steve. Sent back to 1983, Steve tries to save his friends from everything that's coming and takes on the battle against the Upside Down alone with El by his side.

both of those are WIPs tho, so if we want my favourite oneshot, it's definitely the floor time fic, because it's my first ever steddie fic and after answering that first question i'm nothing if not predictable :p

“Nope!” Eddie manages to get out—nice—but that means he needs to start undressing himself, unless he wants Steve to do it for him, which—yes, god yes, but Steve unbuttoning his shirt had already nearly sent Eddie into a coma, so…

His arms drift back and Eddie rolls his shoulders as best he can until his flannel starts to drop, tilting so it falls to the bathroom floor instead of into the bath and does not look at Steve. Nope. Absolutely not. Not if he wants to survive this with their friendship intact.

Eddie likes their friendship. He’s never had a friend quite like Steve before, always there (for good and for ill), always helping, always kind to a fault even as he’s a little mean about it. He’s perfect.

“Oh, uh, no thank you,” she says. It’s a bit stilted, and Robin laughs awkwardly.

Angie smiles and tilts her head. “On a diet, are we? Sensible of you, at least until there’s a ring on that finger,” she laughs and tilts her bowl of whipped cream and almonds so Robin can see inside. “I’m on one myself. Eric is a dear, but he has no idea how hard it is to look this good after three children.”

“Uh, no, it’s not—I just. I’ve, uh—I’ve had enough ice cream to last a lifetime, I think.”

“Oh?” Angie responds politely. Her concoction is melting a bit, but there’s not much she can do, both hands full of styrofoam and melting sweets.

D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can't.

Hmm... There are definitely a fair number that I just don't care at all about or even actively dislike a little bit despite kinda wishing I didn't. I suppose the one that comes most to mind right now is Klapollo. I really like Klavier, and I like Apollo too but he's never been one of the characters I really latched onto hard, and though I get why other people do, I just don't ship them at all. But there's a lot of cute fanart and so many fics for them, some of it has gotta be quite good. Just does not compel me in the least.

H - What is your favorite source text for fandom stuff (e.g., TV shows, movies, books, anime, Western animation, etc.)?

This is an interesting question. When I think about fandoms I have been most active in personally, there are several books and TV shows, and a videogame is probably the longest. I think as a rule I feel like TV (animated or live-action, though I tend a bit more to live action here) tends to feel most like it can make the jump to 'being a fandom' in my head. Usually has enough characters for various subgroups of fans to find favorites. Something longrunning with multiple plotlines over time and plenty of gaps between scenes/episodes lends itself to fic, the visual aspect to gifmaking and fanart/vids, as well as multiple layers of meta analysis available from interpreting expressions/(voice) acting choices to set design to the usual plot and wording available to more written forms as well. The ongoing reactions to new stuff coming out builds community which really feeds fandoms as well. Of course not all of these are necessary and there are many combos of some while not all but... yeah, in general that'd be the media type I link most to fandom.
