i initially read ilya's "was my idea" moment at this was shane's ccm promo opportunity that had been long established. not that the whole shoot was something orchestrated by ilya to get shane in the same room with him again or something similar, which is a read i see not infrequently, which i also understand. seems to be the prevailing understanding of this moment, i haven't read the books so maybe its more clearly corroborated there.

but a ccm plug feels like something more likely to be coordinated by yuna/shane's more image conscious team, and ilya, in my read on the moment initially was that ilya is admitting he had insinuated himself into the promo last minute (2 days ago). which i thought was a very audacious and sexy meet cute by forced proximity of him (because surely rookie season ilya isn't making big pr moves or has the clout to inspire ccm to do whatever he wants on short notice) and was curious when shane got looped in on that. and how he might feel about ilya invading yet another one of his spaces, or how mad he might be about it, or if this is fun for him too.

especially after shane's reaction to being second pick in the draft, doubling down on shane's perception of him as an asshole who's making moves for himself and now, maybe, the suggestion that he'd use shane to do it. which would then feed into if shane believes he can trust his intentions during their hookup (which ilya does not immediately refute when he jokes that he's going to leave after he gets off, and shane, for a brief moment, would have been absolutely right about him after the kind of day they just had because they are already competing in the miscommunication olympics) when the reality is ilya probably just wanted to see the cute boy who is fun to play hockey with again. but shane's got no way of knowing that so it looks how it looks and it looked like ilya just imposing himself on shane's success and shane's still super into him which is fun and i love it
