Spent a bunch of time on the Shelby this weekend. Fixed a couple of coolant leaks, ran it through a few heat cycles to make sure it's running solid, and rubbed the paint down a bit more. Chrysler’s P-body cars, the #DodgeShadow and #PlymouthSundance, were meant to replace the Aries/Reliant K-cars, but that’s not quite what happened. Chrysler reportedly spent almost $600M reworking the K into the P, and the cars were decent sellers through their long run (Aug. ’86 - Mar. ’94) but they were undercut by cut-price “America” versions of the Aries/Reliant and even older Omni/Horizon sold in the same showrooms until 1990. Supposedly, ChryCo. lost money on every P-car. - Considerable effort went into making the P-cars better handlers and more stylish than their forbears - they looked modern and clearly cut from the same cloth as the 1985 Dodge Lancer/Chrysler LeBaron GTS “aero” sedans and the sleek 1987 LeBaron Coupe/Conv. The smaller dimensions made them look tall and upright - reflected on the inside with a very upright, almost SUV-like seating position. Underneath they used some Daytona suspension bits, but they were not particularly engaging to drive despite repeated suspension tweaks aimed at making them sharper. - Power came from the K 2.2L (~93hp) and 2.5L (~100hp) fours in most - adequate for a 2,600-lb. car but just that. However, there were some very fast turbos - anchored by the 175-hp Shelby CSX starting in 1987. The CSX was genuinely quick but never caught on like the earlier Shelby Charger had. Later on, regular Shadows could be had with a 150-hp turbo or a 141-hp Mitsu V6. All were available with manuals, but few chose them. None of this seemed to sell the public on the cars as “fun” - they sold on price and features to pragmatic consumers. - Aside from the CSX, the most interesting P was the Shadow Convertible. With the return of Convertibles in the 80s, it wasn’t long before low-budget ragtops appeared. Chrysler first showed a droptop Sundance prototype in 1987. A production version, designed and built by ASC, arrived in 1991, but exclusive to Dodge. There were two versions, Highline ($13K), and ES ($15K), pricier than the regular Shadow but cheap for a droptop. A small number were built with the 150-hp Turbo, but most were more pedestrian. The Shadow convertible sold well the first year but then dropped off, and was retired by 1993.
