It won’t hurt to just take one. That’s what JJ told himself, but one candy had quickly turned into two candies, and then two turned into three, and—he’d lost count of how many he’d stolen from the stash by now, honestly. His forearms were rested on the table while he intently observed Elena attempting (and soon failing) to glue the pieces of gingerbread together, the dimples in his cheeks becoming prominent while his smile widened and laughter punctuated the air. A hand flying out to snatch the remaining candies from his palm distracted him from any cheeky comments he might’ve made, the brunette’s words scolding yet playful in tone all the same.
❝ If you ask me—❞ he started to say, speaking around the candy in his mouth and pausing only because Elena’s fingers unexpectedly squeezed either side of his chin, gently yet forcibly popping the small candies out from between his lips. Whether she planned on reusing them, spit and all, or she just wanted to take them from him to get her point across, he wasn’t quite sure. Before speaking, he wiped the back of his hand across his mouth. ❝ I’m gonna let you off the hook this time, but that was robbery. Now hear me out. ❞
Still leaned forward, JJ pointed towards the house and moved his finger in small circles for emphasis. ❝ If I was part of this here family, I’d be less worried about decorations and more worried about my damn roof cavin’ in. I mean, I dunno about you, but I’d have some choice words for the person responsible for puttin’ my house together. ❞ His gaze darted over to her, a playful and sly grin painted across his features. Was he roasting her for her failed attempts at gluing the roof while he did nothing to help? Yes. Yes he was. ❝ I’ve seen cardboard boxes with better support. ❞
