The rain didn’t let up, not even for a second. It came down in steady sheets, cold and relentless, soaking Damon to the bone as he stood on the porch. His lips pressed into a thin line, jaw tight, the weight of his own thoughts heavier than the storm that drenched him. He didn’t even know how long he’d been standing there, staring at the door, every memory of Annie carving into him like a blade.

He didn’t deserve her. He never had. That truth had been his undoing for as long as he could remember and what pushing him to run, to drink, to destroy everything he touched before it could slip from his hands. And yet here he was again, pulled back like a tide.

His fingers twitched at his sides before he finally lifted his hand, knuckles knocking twice against the door. The sound was almost swallowed by the rain, and for a fleeting second, he let the silence consume him. Half of him prayed she hadn’t heard and that she’d be spared from him, from the mess of his existence. But the other half, the desperate, selfish half, begged for her to come answer the door.

Damon had been gone so long, Annie was starting to think he wouldn't come back. It was lonely in the house, lonelier than she'd expected. Despite spending so much time alone in it before he'd come to share the space with her, she never noticed it much until he was gone.

She could hear the rain hammering down on the rooftop, another gloomy day in Mystic Falls. She could hardly hear herself think over the sound of it, and so when she heard a knock at the door, she almost thought she was hearing things.

Even still, at worst—there was no one there, but at best—someone was waiting in the pouring rain to be let in. Annie made her way towards the door, unlocking it and tugging it open, her eyes going wide at the sight of Damon standing there—soaking wet as though he'd been out in the rain for hours.

"Damon?"

The word came out surprised, as though maybe she thought she was seeing things, but even her own mind couldn't have conjured up such a sad image.

"You're.. soaking wet." Shaking her head, she reached out, grasping onto his hand and tugging him inside gently. "Let me just—I'll get you a towel. How...?"

"Why were you out in the rain for so long?"

While she spoke, she rushed into the kitchen and grabbed the first towel she saw, nothing fancy but hopefully enough to start getting him dry.

It wasn't the first time that he'd heard the complaint, and he looked over at this latest complainer as he contemplated whether or not he'd do so.

After a long moment he took a step to the left to make room for her. He could remember his mother's complaints about his father and him always taking up all of the space and he didn't particularly want to relive that so soon. "Sorry."

Annie took a small step up next to the man, peering out across the wide-open space in front of them—all lit up while the night sky loomed above. "S'fine."

She turned slightly, tilting her head back to get a proper look at his face. "Not your fault that I'm short, or that you're tall. We all have our faults. Some are just... more easily fixed than others."
