but no omg, that was not directed at you.
Okay, that's a relief. XDYou do know, though, that what they were addressing was the fact that people just use feathers and headdresses in Native American images without bothering to know the significance or for what reason they'd be allowed to wear one, right? Like, most tribes only allow men to wear headdresses, so depicting a woman in one would be incorrect. And a headdress was only given/allowed to be worn by men who did really great or honorable things (which is why the Purple Heart comparison was used in the original post). There's nothing wrong with being proud of and learning about your heritage or introducing it to others. That's not racist. What is is just spreading around false or highly stereotyped images instead of actual facts. There are several different tribes with different ways of dressing, different rituals, different cultural stories. Combining them into one image which doesn't follow any of that is offensive. And after all the historical injustices they've faced, having their culture mocked or appropriated is the topping on the shit-cake. I mean, they've already faced having people feel entitled to their land. Having people feel entitled to their culture and image and sacred things? Especially when most of them don't bother to actually learn what they mean? And when it's totally socially acceptable for children to run around making light of an actual struggle that killed a lot of people? (I would answer this privately, but it won't let me for some reason.)
