Storyhunter is a global community of professional and aspiring video journalists, documentary filmmakers, and multimedia storytellers. We select the most talented local videomakers from around the world to produce authentic, premium journalism for the web.
That's what my friend does. He's been all over the world, to places most people will never visit (Iraq, North Korea, etc.). Last week, Storyhunter hosted an informal video screening of a number of short documentaries, most of which were less than 5 minutes long. Each story was interesting. Each one was different. From base jumpers in Belarus to a community living in a cemetery in The Philippines to women over age 60 competing for a pageant in New York.
If there was anything missing from the videos it was that they should've been longer. The people and the stories drew you in and just when you wanted to learn more, they ended; rarely with any resolution. Each story could have been 45 minutes or an hour or longer. What do the base jumpers do when they get home? What do the Filipino families store in the empty tombs? Why do these women care about this pageant?
There was one story in particular, however, that I knew would make me rich: Dognapping in Mexico City.
Dognapping is becoming an epidemic in Mexico. Mexico City is a city of chaotic economic upheaval. Many citizens are wealthy, many are very poor. Crime is high. Kidnappings and muggings are rampant - a terrible case of the have-nots inflicting terror on the haves and have mores.
In Mexico City, having a dog is a luxury. They are expensive and their owners who love them will do just about anything for them, and they are being marked. A dog owner who's dog is taken is willing to spend thousands to get them back.
Oftentimes, it's the actual kidnapper who returns the dog for the reward. The dog is returned, they get paid off, everyone's happy. It's all one big fix. When the video ended (with no resolution to this problem), the director, who was present, stood up to answer any questions. I raised my hand and said, Hi, I don't have a dog, which will probably be apparent from my question, but don't they have GPS chips for dogs and cats?
The answer is: no, they don't.
Pet collars with GPS chips exist, but any kidnapper worth his tacos can figure out how to unlatch it and toss it down a sewer.
Dogs and cats (and other pets, too) can be microchipped, too, but that's only an RFID (radio frequency identification) that lets a vet or dog shelter scan your pet to prove ownership. It can't track them. That's where I come in and the dollars will inevitably follow.
We create a small, GPS tracker for pets. And in Mexico City (and elsewhere around the world) when your dog gets kidnapped you can log into your computer or iPad and see where your dog is, then you can call the cops and say, Hi, police, my dog has been kidnapped. He's two blocks away in the corner apartment, please go get him. Thanks a bunch.
If you're willing to pay thousands for the safe return of your dog, then you're willing to pay five hundred for Fully Operational's Find Woofie GPS System.
Will your dog mind getting GPS-chipped? Who knows? They're dogs and they don't speak English Espanol.
Find Woofie is great for dogs, cats, horses, donkeys, rabbits, parrots and guinea pigs. Sorry, no goldfish, turtles or tarantulas.
When your family pet gets caught up in some cartel drama, no need to panic, just Find Woofie and you'll be stroking her (or his) belly before you can say, Ayudame!
