2020 wolfstar recs!!

I've seen a few of these posts floating around, and figured I'd do one too! here's a selection of my favourite works that were posted (or completed) in 2020:

Till We Have Arrived Home Again by prouvairing - a post-canon everyone-lives AU where Remus & Sirius have settled in a small muggle town; Harry quits auror training and spends the summer living with them as he learns to become an animagus. this is my #1 Comfort Fic, and it really does feel like coming home; i cannot rec this enough <3

Remain In Light by veeagainst - long canon-divergent AU where Sirius doesn't die in OotP; covers the rest of the series through the end of book 7 (sans epilogue) from a wolfstar POV, expertly interwoven with segments from earlier points in the timeline (everything from Marauders Era to First War to Lie Low At Lupin's). wonderfully well-written, excellent worldbuilding exploration, and the characterisation is absolutely on point!

Sparks by LuminousGloom - another excellent post-canon AU, where Remus brought Sirius back from beyond the Veil; Sirius finds himself dealing with a few spooky consequences as he and Remus build a life after the war.

Schrödinger's Observer by spellingmynamewrong - outsider pov fic set during HBP (where Sirius lives of course): Harry found out last. Also, Harry knew first. Somehow, these two things happened at the same time. (if you've talked to me abt wolfstar for 5 minutes you probably know that i LIVE for fics where wolfstar only get together post-azkaban bc they are Ridiculous Dogsaster Men, and this fic is a prime example of this ultra-rare favourite trope of mine)

Coming Back Together by Notmycatsname - Lie Low At Lupin's oneshot ft. trans Remus! (ie: i finally found some ACTUAL GOOD TRANS REP!! just when i had all but given up hope)

Signs of Affection by KittyCargo - I don't read a lot of nonmagic AUs but this one is super cute!! Deaf!Remus & teacher!Sirius, where Sirius finds out he will have a Deaf student in his class & takes a sign language course. also featuring some adorable found family fluff (Fleamont & Euphemia are also in the course & befriend/adopt Sirius)!

Sirius and Harry Go to White Castle by spellingmynamewrong - this one's really more of a raising Harry story (tho still with eventual wolfstar) but I've got to include it anyway bc it's so rich & detailed & beautiful!! A++ poc rep ft. Chinese Sirius & Desi Harry, where Sirius doesn't go to Azkaban & instead takes Harry and flees the UK, going into hiding in Hong Kong.

A Matter of Interpretation by Lunatik_Pandora - finally a good take on The Prank! (a gen character study)

Weasley & Black: Dark Object Removal by Ray_Writes - a Sirius & Ginny story!! oneshot AU where they find & destroy the Locket during OotP (a gen fic)

oil be there for you by abby10 - jily social media au! James & Lily haven't spoken at all since graduation, until Peter gets suckered into an essential oil pyramid scheme & starts contacting Lily & her friends, which prompts them to get back in touch. this one is ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!

constellations

in which Remus and Sirius come back together at the start of the second war, and discover that sometimes all it takes to change things for the better is a simple leap of faith.

this one is a bit experimental in terms of style; parts of the text were originally written as a comic script (but then I realised it would take wayyy too long to draw everything out so I quickly gave up on that idea lol) & it was fun to play around with incorporating a bit of visual pacing into plain prose, so the original intended rhythm would still be present!

NOTES:

when I saw the arc of lunar phases in the original composition my very first thought was to have Sirius positioned so that his face blocks out the full moon-- one of my favourite aspects of their relationship is how Sirius was willing to do absolutely anything to help make the transformations easier for Remus (no matter how dangerous/illegal it was) & I wanted to convey a bit of that with this illustration.

the symbol over Sirius is the alchemical sign for amalgamation (combining different elements/aspects together) because imo these two are strongest together & bring out the best in each other (and I love how they are just 100% ride or die & willing to trust each other implicitly even after over a decade apart, because at the end of the day their bond has always been unbreakable & Peter's Big Miscalculation was that he could ever truly turn them against each other and get away with it).

I also drew them older here (how i envision them in the timeline of the books) because post-Azkaban is and always has been my favourite era (but like... AU where they don't get needlessly killed off and/or shoved into creepy forced hetero romances ofc). not that I don't enjoy the Marauders era too, I'm just aaallll about that h/c & reconciliation & struggling to heal from their traumas together, so this pic is also sort of about that for me? wolfstar coming back together after everything they've been through and (finally) finding happiness/peace...!!

concerning tattoos-- on the one hand I do think Sirius would be into body modification like piercings & tattoos, and I could definitely see him inscribing things into his own skin while in prison just for something to do & in an effort to keep himself grounded, but on the other hand.... that doesn't really make sense given the extreme inhumane conditions of Azkaban (where tf would he get ink and needles while in a solitary confinement mind-prison?? like it's established that most prisoners are completely mad in the space of weeks so I really doubt there would be access to that sort of thing, or even the opportunity to request it) so I sort of split the difference and went with something more along the lines of scarification, as I find it a lot more plausible that he could have improvised something sharp without the need for ink or the level of precision required for tattoos.

I ended up doing quite a lot of overpainting on this piece (particularly at the top with the moons and cloud details) so I thought the contrast between the inks and final was especially interesting! I do a lot of my work with gouache but I rarely apply them opaquely over the top of brush inks & copics (except maybe as small highlights); I really like how that effect came out here.
