On most days John didn't really mind that he was a half-human, half-dog hybrid: he had an excellent sense of smell, the ears on top of his head could hear a lot better than those of an ordinary human being, and his long tail helped him to maintain his balance, as well as indicate his mood far more effectively than facial expressions alone. Everything was different on New Year's Eve, though, when the whole world went mad with noises and lights. John was getting more and more restless, barking and whining in turn, unable to find any peace. If only Sherlock would at least come home from that bloody lab and provide him some comfort! What an insensitive git.

AU where after Sherlock falls, John adopts a small black cat called Nyalock. And on his way out of London, Sherlock finds a large  brown dog called Captain John  and takes him along on his hunt.

When John and Sherlock reunit, it turns out that Captain and Nya get along very well, and the four of them go about their lives, with the two pets helping out on cases from time to time.
