your heart is very lonely, isn’t it? is your fortress of ice self-made? are others afraid of you, or are you afraid of them? are you afraid of hurting them, or of being hurt? vulnerability and connection can be frightening, but that’s no reason to shy away from their light, to tuck yourself small into corners, to build up frigid walls to keep yourself from feeling. you will heal when you allow yourself to draw closer to the flames and thaw.

perched there in his lap, the woman that has, for once, allowed herself to feel human in the presence of another, leans back and away from hughie's shoulder, where she had tucked her visage to avoid having to see his in fear that this - the next step in what she's loosely hoping can be called a relationship - is the end.

intimacy is difficult at this level, to the point that she has grown certain she takes after their shared father figure in that aspect. perhaps it was just never an option for her. does he know? does hughie have the insight to understand that the girl wearing nothing but a pair of plain blue cotton panties and a white polka-dot bra still holds onto what butcher calls her card?

her gaze meets his, her lower lip tugged between teeth with the height of her nerves kicking around in her chest like a bronco. the arms around his bare, freckled shoulders pull back, but not to put distance between them. no, dogmeat is reaching to remove the necklace from herself, two bright and shining dog tags dangling from the chain that she lowers into his palm after she draws it from her side.

"i don't want you to die," she whispers, turning the top tag in his palm and letting him look. letting him see the truth stamped in steel. her own little declaration of i love you in the form of a name. willowbrook mars. "not without knowing who i really am. then... then we can go together."

her attention remains down on the tags, desperate not to feel the icy sting of possible rejection as her hands settle in her own lap, up higher than they'd naturally fall so she doesn't create more awkwardness in touching his boxers or worse.

yes, she's gotten close twice to them together, once to nimue by herself, and twice to fenrír by himself. she has actually been face to face with fenrír more than that as an adult, but never gotten close to her goal of killing them. this i sbecause she didn't actually want to kill them and lift the veil until fairly recently. it's only been about 150 years since the goal has been in place. before that, she had a decent relationship with both of her parents.

literally all of the above. she's a very angry person when it comes to other people not having basic human kindness. thank your service workers, be nice to your servers and tip them if you're in the states, hold the door open for people, turn off your fucking speaker phone in the middle of this grocery store susan!! also, while she absolutely agrees that people have a valid desire to be / remain child free and want child free spaces, the people that act entitled to a child free world piss her off so much. so do people that film in public without any fucks to give about the people around them.

answering this solely from the perspective of her boys verse, but when she was little on the compound, the one thing she had that was blatantly outsider from the things that vought let on premises at the behest of her mother was a big bird dolly that she carried with her everywhere she went. you might be thinking that this started when she was a baby and ended somewhere before ten years old, but no, she carried it until the day she burned the compound down at seventeen, and the only reason she didn't keep it afterwards was because in her paranoia about being tracked, she tore him apart. and she was right, there was a tracker in the dolly. any love or connection she had to her mother through it was stomped out, though she does still catch herself lingering any time big bird is visible in any capacity around her.

BUTCHER.

it wasn't his, initially. silver the beanie baby belonged to his mother, who never bought into the craze, but she got this one because it reminded her of lenny. william's younger brother had wanted a cat that looked just like him they found on the street, but of course that wasn't a possibility. it wasn't until after both her boys were gone in some capacity that connie picked up the old thing on a thrift shelf. he doesn't talk about it any, but silver sits there next to lenny's trophy in the classroom that is his home.
