Winding the Maypole
First Maypole of the season and I get to wind another in two weeks.
The wonderful thing about dancing a Maypole is it's going to be chaotic, people forget if they have to go over or under. Differences in height and lengths of ribbon make weaving awkward. You have patches that don't cross right over the pole. It doesn't matter, none of that ever matters. We laugh, we make sex jokes, the pattern weaves lower and we come in tighter.
And the energy is so high, we feel good for what we have made. It can look ratchet up top, no one cares, it's beautiful because of everyone's effort.
Alot of my pagan friends, they've been with this way of life for a long while. Since before I was born. They've watched groups come up from nothing, helped to cultivate them, and let them slip away and decline. People get old, and tired. One of my friends remarked, "What happened to the people who were supposed to take it all over?"
"...I'm sorry man. Call it Millennial syndrome. But we'll come around."
Because things do come around. My Witch friend invited us to her house to just feel a sense of community again. Every opportunity to connect through spirituality in the wider community has fallen apart, either because of drama, lack of resources or lack of interest. It sucks.
We ended up talking about organizing a camping retreat, invite only, ritual intensive sort of shindig. Maybe no more than thirty, to do some heavier kinda work, pull people into altered states, give them something to feel, jarr their comforts and conventions, come away with something that they will have to sit and work with long after the weekend is over. She loves the idea. It's a big project and I think it's one worth taking on.
These are the kind of things a Maypole does. It brings people together through laughter and joy. We set aside old hurts to be in that moment. We feel hopeful and are inspired to share with others.
It's love. It's the family you make for yourself. It's the promise of something more. Everything as it should be, for one afternoon, when it's not too hot and not too cold. It's eating strawberries while sitting around a fire pit. It's singing dirty limericks and making offerings to the Horned One. It's feeling the Goddess come through in our laughter and our songs. It's a shining moment when the world feels right.
That's how I celebrate Beltane.
