Norsery Rhymes from A to Z Happy Thorsday - Dolgr the Troll-like Dwarf
Well here we are another Thor’s Day and another 20 min sketch of a Norse (and Germanic) mythological characters. This week it’s Dolg / Dolgr / Dólg / Dólgr the Dwarven (Dverg / Dvergr / Dwarf). One of the names listed in the Þulur, Skáldskaparmál, in the Prose Edda.
His name has quite a few translations as the word carries a few meanings depending on context in old Norse and German and English. Derived from the word Delg, to hit', injure', 'scar', and 'wound'. Basically meaning to 'fight' or be a 'warrior', in a very real and human physical sense. For Dolg / Dolgr then, it took on a supernatural connotation. Literally it can mean ' The Enemy', 'The Monster', 'The Hostile', or ' The Fiend', 'Troll', or 'The Direful Enemy'.
Which is why Dolg the Dwarf can be described as a Troll-like Dwarf, and enemy warrior.
Not a lot is known about him beyond that.
