madrid fashion week: dolores cortés
although we actually just saw her s/s 2013 range at the miami swim fashion week, it seems that spanish designer dolores cortés (see also s/s 2012) has quickly turned out another--mostly swimwear--range for what should also be s/s 2013 at madrid fashion week. it's kind of unclear what exactly is going on, particularly as i saw one or two corresponding looks (though the rest appeared to be wholly new), but i suppose all the same, we can give homegirl some real props for being one of the more prolific designers out there (all the while being completely awesome; not the easy feat!).
so. ultimately, i guess we should just see this as an utterly new work, and try to treat it as such, because, after all, there was so much new to us here. does that sound fair? anyway, the collection also felt wholly different because of the stated inspiration. according to the spanish site el mundo, the designer (trans.) "is immersed in a sea of prints that recall the classic Aztec drawings."
anyway, carrying on, they added that (again, trans.) "(t)he explosion of colour was everywhere and drawn in doses. When the tone goes on colour-block ing, texture is woven in with the crochet needle. Powerful turquoise and orange make a small nod to the hand-made traditions and hippies on the island of Ibiza. The dresses and kurtas are made to match swimsuits as they become the stars in number over the bikinis."
however, impressed as i was, unfortunately, elle was a little more skeptical with the proceedings, stating that this was (trans.) "(a) colourful proposal of tribal prints where triquinis are always hollow. We liked the long dresses and some psychedelic pieces to go down to the beach and the tassels as ornaments." hmm. i wished they've have been a little more enthused. after all, as we know, swimwear is hard.
anyway, elsewhere, trendencias commented that this was (trans.) "a mix of cultures in which we see ethnic prints, bold colours and distinctive graphics. A combination of old with cutting edge geometries...all designs come loaded with bright colours and strong contrasts of fluorine nuances. In addition to the classic black and white."
and finally, the spanish site hola chimed in that (trans.) "(t)he designer looks back to the drawings and graphics of ancient cultures to devise a collection in which the chromaticism of vibrant ethnic-inspired prints takes center stage. Bikinis, swimsuits and triquinis with very clean lines, very feminine shapes that are accentuated by playing with strips...that intertwine and contribute to highlighting the figure of women."
and they added that (again, trans.) "(t)he vibrant hues of geometric prints complement other smooth, but very intense tones, like orange, fuchsia, blue, and turquoise, plus the always elegant black and white."
